Thanks for the kind words!
The first thing I did was take a green scouring pad and, in a circular motion, scratch up the surface of each piece until they had a lighter, hazier finish. I then used #0000 steel wool to bring the pieces back up to a shine, generally following the direction of the tooling marks; "going with the grain" as they say.
In my dishwasher, there are 2 compartments for powdered dish soap. I filled the smaller one (labeled "15". Is it in millileters? I'm not the best with volumes. The other compartment is labeled "25"). I originally washed the booster/clamp section by itself, then did the pommel, grenade, and emitter pieces in one batch. The booster by itself came out better than the pieces I did in a batch. The patina was much darker on the batch pieces and required more clean up with the steel wool. I would recommend doing each piece separately for this reason. I ran the dishwasher on the "speed" setting, which is about an hour long. It does use the heat cycle.
Here are pics in order. The first is the raw, machine finish piece. The second is after a pass with the scouring pad. The third is after the steel wool, and the fourth pic is after an hour in the dishwasher. In the final pic, you can see along the bottom where I had already begun knocking the tarnish back with the steel wool.
Hope this helps!
