I saw this last night, but wanted to let it sink in before posting my two cents. Overall, it was a bit disappointing for me.
I think the closing shot of TFA was deeply moving; a powerful, highly anticipated moment delivered completely absent of dialogue. The score, the actors performances......... despite my overall thoughts of that movie, I think that scene is classic emotional cinematic storytelling. In TLJ, that moment was completely ruined with an absurd, misguided attempt at humor. I think that moment (along with the ridiculous Hux / Poe exchange) set the tone for me.
Most of the humor in this film missed it's mark, not all, but most. I don't understand how they keep getting this wrong. The "someone get this walking carpet out of my way" attempt at cheap humor worked in the late 70s, not so much now. I know humor has it's place and can work, Rogue One with K2SO got it right, it was perfect. Luke milking that animal and drinking it, what the hell was I watching.
I don't have the strength to go on and on, like the movie. I didn't like how Poe was written in this movie, Laura Dern's performance was just not convincing for me for someone in that position, I didn't like how they portrayed Luke (and his decision on how to handle Ben) in the academy flashback scenes, Phasma was again a joke, Benecio del Torro's character missed the mark, just wasn't feeling it. And Snoke, who is he, how did he get to power, then he dies and that's it! Do they wait to explain that in Episode IX when I no longer care?
I enjoyed seeing Yoda interact with Luke again, I think Driver and Ridley did a good job, but was overall disappointed in how Luke was used. The movie just didn't work for me, I don't hate it, there were some good parts.........I just wish it could have been as good as the trailer. I'm bummed.........
