Yikes! Mel Gibson caught on tape and dropped from agency

I'm not a therapist, but having been deeply involved in the church when that film came out, the cynical side of me thought that subconsciously, some people were really grooving on the violence, especially those who have been sheltered from "the world."

Again, my initial comment was a response to someone saying they couldn't believe the maker of The Passion would be so abusive, and I'm simply saying I don't think the film has that much in the way of spiritual merit. This isn't an anti-Christian observation. I just don't see making that film as a huge sign that the guy is pious. It's very manipulative.

Thanks for the clarification, I think I understand your meaning better now. I'm sure there probably are plenty of folks that got off on it because of the violence. I really wouldn't doubt it would be the case.

For me it has a lot of spiritual meaning but I completely agree that just because he made the movie doesn't make him pious or faithful. I think a lot of people, including myself, fell into the obvious trap of assuming it did mean that unfortunately.

Personally, I'm disappointed in his actions but I'm also in no place to cast stones. Lord knows I've said my share of horrible things.

Obviously a set up on her part. Duh. There was conversation before what was released that we don't get to hear. They could have been talking for an hour before that, but we only hear the part that makes him look bad, and of course she is perfectly calm. I've said worse and heard worse. Personally I don't care who or what Mel Gibson likes or doesn't like.

+2:thumbsup All the self-righteous indignation turns my stomach far worse than anything Mel has ever said.

Well i guess i'm the middle aged white racist hermophob male shovinist pig. I've said worse and i would bet most if not all of you have too in a moment of anger. I really don't think it's all that bad. So he used the N word. When the black community is so offended by the N word that they themselves stop using it i will then maybe be offended by it. As to the rest, i think fake and porn star type big boobs are nasty looking and spells out hooker to me too. He should have never hooked up with this Russian goldigger to begin with.

I'm with you 100%. I'm no angel, I just feel sorry for Mel knowing this is more than likely going to end the career of someone I truly enjoyed seeing. Like I said - I'm sad - not shocked.

This will not stop me from seeing his movies. My wife, who can be pretty harsh, doesn't think it was that bad either.

I really think The Passion and We Were Soldiers made him into the new "John Wayne", an uber patriotic, ethical family man.

I bet if he would not have made those two movies, people would still think of him as Martin Riggs, who WOULD say those sorts of things.

He admits to hitting her while she is holding her baby, because she ****ing deserved it. I guess that's normal behind the scenes stuff for most folks, but not me.

Oh, I know that Marion made bad movies!

But the two movies named aren't anything special, that's what I was saying.

Sorry, but The Passion (to me) was fantastic. I'm not a die hard christian, but to take a story that everyone knows and take the chances he did with language as well as the gravity of what you were seeing - I'd like to see someone else do better. He is a gifted director - you can't take that away from him.

Allegedly, there has been no proof, just a few peoples word that they heard it on a tape which hasn't been released. We don't know the context. :unsure

Not that I condone it, but I've heard far worse rants from both men and women aimed at their "significant others" in the heat of anger. Two things are clear to me:

1. Taken out of context, anything can be made to look or sound bad. Yes, some of the language he used is questionable at best, but I've known a lot of people who have said questionable things when they're angry, things they wouldn't have said otherwise.

2. There is no reason for this tape to exist other than for her to use it against him in some way; she may have instigated the situation for this very reason.

"News" websites like RadarOnline and TMZ only exist because of sensationalist, trash journalism like this, and a large percentage of the general public eats it up like candy. If this had been some non-celebrity couple featured on Cops or Jerry Springer, nobody would care. But because Mel Gibson's involved (or any other celebrity, for that matter) we're suddenly supposed to be interested? Gimme a break.

Quoted for truth.

Hmmm. Just my thoughts:

I went to see The Passion one Easter. I had heard that the violence was horrible and I didn't really want to see it. I figured, hey, if He went through it for me, the least I can do is witness what He suffered. I was curious why the Jewish community was so distraught that the film was being made.

It was every bit as bad as I had heard. I will not need to see that film ever again.

However, I am glad that I saw it. It is one thing to read the word scourged and another to see it done. It's ironic that all I could think to summarize how aghast I was were the words "Oh, my God!"

I have a new appreciation for what being crucified means.

Back to the topic:

I find it regrettable that Mel is so filled with hate. I guess it was black people's turn in the crucible. Probably homosexuals will be next. Or Latinos.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY can push a man's buttons like a once wholly trusted female companion. I am shamed to admit that I have embarked on tirades in a blind fit of rage that make Mel's seem like a Sunday school lecture.

I have no doubt that Mel's russian lover set that up and purposely encited him into a blind rage.

These celebrity tirades recorded during what they thought were private conversations disturb me. Alec Baldwin's diatribe against his daughter was more disturbing to me; because underneath it all, I suspect Mel's Russian companion has earned Mel's disdain [although I seriously doubt that blacks have].

Alec Baldwin's daughter, on the other hand?

Very well said...I agree !!

My father had a similar anger management problem, women this, blacks that, poofs the other. Couldn't respect the man less.

For a man to fly into a rage at women, that's one of the weakest things that you can do. And no matter how drunk or angry I've been in my life, i don't think i've ever used the 'n' word in a derogatory way. None of this means I'm a hero, it just means I'm a normal person.

I've been giving this thread a lot of thought, about how a bunch of people have come forward to say, "hey, who cares, I've done worse and there's nothing wrong with it". I honestly don't know how to respond to that. I'm not judging, but neother is it a "weak" society that makes taboos out of these extreme prejudices. Quite the reverse. In fact, the only times I've been violent in my life have been when my wife, or gay friends, or black friends, have gotten that kind of language from others.

Some tough guy gets drunk and reams out his wife? Slow handclap to you.

I agree that everybody has bad days, but not once while I was having a bad day did my angry tirades include racial slurs.

First it was the Jews, now black people, and Latinos. It is my understanding that she started recording her calls because he got violent. He admits to hitting her in the face while she was holding his child in one of the taped conversations, and threatens to burn the house down. These are both crimes. I could give a crap about celebrity gossip, but when you're dealing with a megalomaniac criminal/racist I appreciate it getting leaked to the news, as I would rather not support the person financially by going see their movies.

It's all good and nice to want everything to be peachy all the time, and to want mankind to aspire to the stars, but context is always important in my opinion. And opinion's are just that, of course.

All we are really talking about is social taboos.

I'm curious...what is the important context one needs to explain hitting a woman because quote "she deserved it"?

I understand that this is a world in which for some not using hate speech or hitting your wife is aspirational thinking, but really. :unsure
