I'm not a therapist, but having been deeply involved in the church when that film came out, the cynical side of me thought that subconsciously, some people were really grooving on the violence, especially those who have been sheltered from "the world."
Again, my initial comment was a response to someone saying they couldn't believe the maker of The Passion would be so abusive, and I'm simply saying I don't think the film has that much in the way of spiritual merit. This isn't an anti-Christian observation. I just don't see making that film as a huge sign that the guy is pious. It's very manipulative.

Well i guess i'm the middle aged white racist hermophob male shovinist pig. I've said worse and i would bet most if not all of you have too in a moment of anger. I really don't think it's all that bad. So he used the N word. When the black community is so offended by the N word that they themselves stop using it i will then maybe be offended by it. As to the rest, i think fake and porn star type big boobs are nasty looking and spells out hooker to me too. He should have never hooked up with this Russian goldigger to begin with.
I really think The Passion and We Were Soldiers made him into the new "John Wayne", an uber patriotic, ethical family man..
John Wayne starred in great movies, which these aren't.
He admits to hitting her while she is holding her baby, because she ****ing deserved it. I guess that's normal behind the scenes stuff for most folks, but not me.
Not that I condone it, but I've heard far worse rants from both men and women aimed at their "significant others" in the heat of anger. Two things are clear to me:
1. Taken out of context, anything can be made to look or sound bad. Yes, some of the language he used is questionable at best, but I've known a lot of people who have said questionable things when they're angry, things they wouldn't have said otherwise.
2. There is no reason for this tape to exist other than for her to use it against him in some way; she may have instigated the situation for this very reason.
"News" websites like RadarOnline and TMZ only exist because of sensationalist, trash journalism like this, and a large percentage of the general public eats it up like candy. If this had been some non-celebrity couple featured on Cops or Jerry Springer, nobody would care. But because Mel Gibson's involved (or any other celebrity, for that matter) we're suddenly supposed to be interested? Gimme a break.

Some tough guy gets drunk and reams out his wife? Slow handclap to you.
It's all good and nice to want everything to be peachy all the time, and to want mankind to aspire to the stars, but context is always important in my opinion. And opinion's are just that, of course.
All we are really talking about is social taboos.
