Yet Another Recaster

So I've just discovered that "empire-worldwide" has been selling recasts of my original 300 cape clasp sculpt on ebay for who knows how long.

Spartan 300 Clasp

I know there are members on here that have bought some of his Jack Sparrow stuff and I'm sure he is a talented artist, so this comes as quite a disappointment in someone who should know better.

I sculpted the original back in September of 2007 and I have proof that he bought one from me. There is absolutely no doubt that this is a recast.

I've sent him an email politely asking him to take down his auctions. I'll keep everyone here posted on the outcome. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that somehow he perhaps was unaware that this was my original sculpt when he bought one from me back in 2007. Hopefully he will handle this like a gentleman and with respect to other artist's work.

Can you point out the proof? It looks different to me...maybe I'm missing something?

Nevermind, I see a couple of tells...though the dimensions look different...maybe lens distortion.

Yeah, I thought it looked different as well. I mean, sure it looks similar, but my guess is, any attempt to make one of these will result in similarities.

Sorry I just don't see it??? As stated above, sizing and other things look way to different to be considered a recast, but then again what do i know??? :confused

I see quite a few interesting similarities:

In the photo, the one on the right is turned slightly more to the right than the other one. If it's not recast, then he very obviously "copied" SI's very closely.

The one thing that made me reconsider was if you look in the middle of the "T" on his water mark, there is a little bump, and on the one to the right it seems to be there as well. And in the first "A" there is a pit... Maybe he resculpted/added to parts of it?

Beaten!

Yeah, his photo was taken at a slight angle, but do look at the small imperfections around the boarder, (especially in the lower right hand corner), it's absolutely the same. Plus he bought one from me. No way he sculpted this himself.

Here is a couple more comparison pics:(if this doesn't convince you I dunno what will

You can almost pick each individual divot. If only I had higher res pics.

The new angels certainly shed some light on the subject, I withdraw my previous statement.

I can now see a few things as well.

There were several spots on the first pictures that matched up, but could be explained by him having used yours as reference, but these new pictures is about as clear a slam dunk as it can get.

If it is not your original piece that he bought from you that he is selling, then it is a recast off of your work.

Sorry to see that happen to you.

Not cool. :thumbsdown

They look much different to me as well. I don'think it's a recast. Looks like maybe he used yours for reference and sculpted his own.

it funny how rough they both look. I guess air bubbles make this one better looking. I don't understand why someone would recast something that seems so simple to sculpt anyway

Mine is not even screen accurate. You honestly believe he was so impressed with my sculpt that he replicated mine down to the very last little nick and divot? The only reason it looks slightly different is because the photo was taken from a slightly different angle.

To prove this to anyone who doubts this is a recast I'll re-shoot photos of my sculpt with the exact same angles and then overlay them in photoshop. Would that convince you?

The shape can be altered and the larger details filled and cleaned... but all those tiny dots along the surface... just way too similar to be someone sculpting his own using this original as reference. Simply not plausible to get all those that perfect.

There's no doubt in my mind with the latest pictures posted.

I think your new pictures are pretty convincing. I didn't see it from the ones at the top, but when you can see that it matches mark for mark, it seems clear.

It is unfortunate that this happened. :(

man this does suck. Are these supposed to be made of metal in the movie? if so I wonder what people would pay for real metal ones. also that would eliminate them being recast if they were hand forged :D
