X-Men First Class Movie Discussion

Defiitely the best X-Men movie yet and I venture to say one of the best superhero movies- I would rank it up there with Spiderman and Batman-The Dark Knight. I really enjoyed and felt emotionally invested in the relationship between Charles and Erik and really enjoyed knowing the back history on how sides/alliances were formed as I did not know the comics. I got pretty teary eyed in several parts of this film. For a movie we weren't going to see, I have to say thanks to GINO for recommending it to us. Outstanding and a MUST SEE film!
 
They did Nick. In the Auschwitz scene where Erik is seperated from his parents.

I was pleasantly suprised that alot of the original soundtrack from X1 was respectively honored, too.

I can't help but wonder how many of us loved this movie at least in a small part because our expectations were so unbelievably low. It is truly rare for a movie to surpass my expectations and you can't help but walk out smiling when that happens, even if the movie wasn't perfect.

I really loved the other X-Men movies, easily one of my favorite Comic Book Movie series (yes, I liked all 3 movies). And while I kinda wanted to see this, I knew Art absolutely did not want to at all. Not to mention, I really hadn't seen anything in the trailer that made me feel I would be missing something great if I didn't go.
 
Is it just me, or was First Class the first X film to finally have some decent music? I know a lot of people really like the X2 theme/end credits, but aside from that, I, personally, didn't find the scores for the first 4 films to be too memorable. Yes, I know a lot of the music was adapted from the themes of the Singer movies, but it really seemed to pop more in First Class.

Are we really surprised by this? The only movie I've seen that he's directed which seems to have any interest in being more than a flashy action flick is Red Dragon.

Then again, I haven't seen a WHOLE lot of his films so maybe I've just missed the good ones in the midst of all the Rush Hour movies. ;)
 
Ouch. Yeah, his quiet protest was squashed by his arrogance. And this is why he will continue to put out subpar films. Maybe he'll get a clue after he starts receiving his social security.
 
I am a little confused... with all the talk from Vaghn that this would be reboot. It certainly doesn't feel like one with the cameos by Romijn and Jackman. The make-up for Mistique is identical... as is the morphing effect. The mansion was shot at the same location. The sound effect used when Magneto uses his powers is the same... musical cues were lifted from the first three movies. Even the opening scene was identical to the opening scene of X-Men. This also appears to be the reason for using different characters as the first class.

Now I don't mind these things... I loved the first two X-Men movies. I really enjoyed this one, and I think the connection to the other movies helped sell it to me. In fact, I think a reboot would have been a mistake after the popularity of the other films.

I just don't understand his comments about it being a reboot because of the disaster of the last two films.

Now, can we get Vaghn and Singer to get together and do an X-4 that fixes the mess X-3 left behind? Maybe say the whole thing was a danger room simulation... or coma induced dream... or just write a good script that puts everything back where it should be. Then they can go back and do a sequel to this.

Not sure if anything I said made any sense... anyway... I liked it :thumbsup
 
All the nods and references to the first three movies were great - but sadly were nearly ruined for me when they changed things up that makes in NOT part of the storyline of the previous films - specifically, the brevity of Erik's and Prof. X's relationship - professor getting paralyzed and them parting ways contradicts the opening scene of X-3. Granted, many disliked X-3 though I was fine with it.

The older I get, the more I understand how a good friend you share a worldview with as a young man might end up at odds with you, then friends again, then briefly on the same page because of mutual self-interest, then enemies, then through understanding reach a sort of non-aggression pact.

This was a really rich film that made me appreciate the others more.
 
I liked most of the movie. Thought Michael Fassbinder was the best thing in it. That dude can smolder and emote.

I've read the original comics... and some of them are wonderful. Chris Claremont/ Dave Cockrum's version was a childhood favorite. I gotta say, as much of a fan I am of the original Jack Kirby art, the Magneto helmet looks really LAME in this movie. It looked too big on Kevin Bacon. (SPOILER ALERT) It looked better on Fassbinder. But, still, YUCK. I actually wish they'd MODIFY the helmet so it doesn't look so dopey (Sorry, Jack.)

The highlight for me was the special effects shots of the submarine lifting from the water. I love it when movies capture the scope of the extreme action from the comics. (You'd think we'd have gotten a decent Sentinels scene by now.)

Finally, the Sixties setting rocked! Mutations are groovy... indeed.
 
Did you see the big emblem on the helmet at the end? It was huge. It needs toned down. I'd also agree that it doesn't fit right. One change I'd make would be to take the piece on the nose bridge up a little bit. It also doesn't look very comfortable for the actor. Another would be to take it in a little so it fits better.
 
X3 was ****, the only thing I liked about it was beast and colosus and they got screwed out of screen time.

As I understand it from reading, all those cameo's were just that. This film has nothing to do with the other 3.
 
I don't see how anyone (director or audience) can claim this movie isn't a direct prequel to the trilogy when they start this movie off with the EXACT same scene as X-Men. If that isn't a needle full of "this is the same universe" in your arm, I don't know what is.

There are enough nods and suggestions to make you think its a prequel, but could be a reboot that changes everything if there are subsequent films. Its a time will tell thing.
 
With all the close-knit themes, footage in the begining, I'm sure Matthew Vaughn received alot of advice from Bryan Singer. Probably out of respect/continiuty for the first two films. You can see and hear Singer's influence throughout the film.
