Honestly mainstream audiences just mainly like photographs. Illustrations golden age has sadly past.

Also actor's contracts often have a big influence over how a movie poster looks like. Mnay contracts demand that their star's face must be as big as or bigger on all publicity materials.

That's also why lots of independant movies will have the cooler looking poster. Studios pay big money to buy these stars celebrity appeal and want to use it. SO they end up sticking a ton of famous famous faces on a poster rather than coming up with a cool story appropriate design.

Lots of politics at hand in these multimillion dollar affairs.

Azazel was never an X Man was he? Wait, is he an X Man in this movie?

I just got done playing Wolverine Origins for the Xbox and to my surprise they made John Wraith Nightcrawler's father. I know it's not canon but still. Like comic books aren't confusing enough.

Also I swear I've seen promo pics and Azazel had a tail? Where's it gone?

Azazel is part of the Hellfire Club. From what it seems a founding member in the film. He did have a tail in the trailer, I believe he even used it to subdue a human in the garden attack scene.

In the comics she's his mom and I'm pretty sure she was Rogue's real mom too. They get points for having the original SR 71 style Blackbird they used in the 80s on the poster.

I have some hope that this movie is gonna be good, but I don't remember the last time I saw a movie with such generic and clumsy promotional materials! So much of it looks like beginning graphic design class projects...

Anywhere outside the US always receive the best promotional material. It happened with X3 as well. Japan received some pretty cool posters that you could only find online.

WTF? Banshee was cool but Alex is younger than Scott (at this point in time he would be just a kid) and Beast was well, Beastie. The formula just turned him blue, Right?

They're really screwing with the origins with this one.
