X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket v.2 - FINISHED!

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket - DISASTER! HELP! 7/17/14

Ah man. What a bummer!!!

Measure twice, sculpt for months once. [emoji37]

Brother, you ain't kidding.

I'm currently in talks with a product adviser who might now a thing or two. Unfortunately, the conversation, as it's going so far, seems to be "It should work, but that's to say I don't have any data that says it won't work, either."

Seems I'll have to walk into the breach on my own. Learn from my mistakes if you find my corpse.

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket - DISASTER! HELP! 7/17/14

I forgot to add this to the last post. Look upon its pathetic, puny form and pity it not; nay, weep instead.

This is now on the back burner until I get enough cabbage for the solvents. Which I'll probably mess up, as well. At the least, that'll be some significant information for the RPF and, more relevantly, for me in future.

Did the same thing when I sculpted my Dark Knight cowl. Nothing you can do about it as far as I'm aware. I know how you feel :/

Not so fast, my pessimistic friend; I may yet have saved this. There are of pics documenting the process but I managed to swing 4 gallons of Xylol today to fully submerge my mold and within an hour and a half, possibly two, it grew 100% its original size. The only negative I can really complain about is that it stinks to high hell of paint stripper. I'm letting sit outside overnight to see if I can't lessen the stench.

I'd shout "SUCCESS" if that were the case. I'm still cautious at this point; I still have to make a support shell and patch a few spots that gave way (pics of that to come)

It ain't over yet! Not by a long shot!

P.S. Of that those four gallons of Xylol, I only kept one; as soon as I used what I needed it for, I dumped them back into the canisters and bluffed returned the three. I saved 60 bucks and bluffe---returned the others and none were the wiser. I have no problems telling you that I basked in how clever I was for a while after that.

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket - NEVERMIND!- 7/27/14

RETRACTION: They don't call it "Rebound" for nothing, lemme tell you.

I went and checked on it today and, sunovagun, it shrank back to its original size overnight. It seems this wasn't meant to happen for me. Back to the back-burner, again.

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket - V2- 10/12/14

You can't keep a good build down. Among the many other things I've been doing, I've been hacking away at this build again whenever I've got the time to spare. I've scrapped by bull**** foam insulation model, bought some more clay, and dished out the 50 some-odd bucks for one of the Ed heads on Monster Maker to build it proper this time. At the rate this is going, I should have done the real thing justice by the time the Director's/Rogue cut of the film makes it to dvd.:p

This is the front right now, and having the blessing by the guy who modeled the original bucket, I'm working off screens of the original 3D renders to get as accurate as I can to the bucket on screen (as far as I'll take it, anyway):

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket - V2- 10/12/14

Completely irrelevant by now but I've still been chipping away at this some more in my free time. Some slight reshaping and hacking for the most part but there are some added/refined details. I think I'm happy where it's at right now; I thinking of adding the cracks and scratches next. The surface is semi-smoothed but being the original idea that Magneto made this bucket from various metals, himself, I think a somewhat uneven surface is a nice touch.

Here's some comp pics of the bucket with the reference pics I'm using (straight from the original designer, himself).

As I mentioned earlier, at the rate I'm going, this should be done by the time the Extended Cut is released on video!:lol

Nice work! I'm making an Iron man helmet from a 3d print, with plans to mold and cast it. I really hope it's not too small. :)

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket - V2- 1/1/15

Finished the detailing last night with surprisingly relative ease. Now, with better reference material, I think it came out better than the first time I did this!

PICS!

Onto prepping for molding! Again!

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket - V2- 1/3/15

How did you get the reference pictures from the original modeler?

I found his blog awhile back when I was working on the helmet the first time around and got in contact with him through there; posted some pics and some info on the project and he put up some photos of his render to help me out (and to add to his blog posts ;)). I'm considering sending him a cast, when I get around to it, for him to sign in thanks.

For any of you who want to check out some of the other films he's worked on (and they are many and many of which are popular on this forum), you can check his stuff both on his blog and on his site, here and here.

Alright, some updating. Got a little more touch-ups to go through before I sent this thing to molding.

First off, refined the emblem some more. Shortened the wing flare things and added the little hooks in the center where they meet, and tapered it a bit more.

Added the undercut for the bucket and also for the ears (which got a few touch ups, too).

The back got some love, too. Though I snapped the photo at an odd angle that makes it look off.

Here's where it stands currently. Filled in the face and then that's when it's okay to mold. Three layers on it right now (or one whole trial kit), need to add the keys and then another layer. After which, mother mold!

It's getting close, kids! Again!!

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket v.2 - 1/13/15: Molding (Sorta)

Been a busy bee with some free time I've got recently and have managed to finish this project. Almost, anyway. The buckets are currently airing out the crystal clear but to catch ya'll up to speed:

1) Molding and fiberglass jacket applied. I separated the jacket into three sections so it'd be easier to de-mold; a first for me to actually think ahead in a project like this.

001.JPG 002.JPG

Original sculpt demolded and everything is sexy! So fresh and so clean to where the sclupt survived untouched! Another first! Plugged up the nose with left over silicone to spare resin.

003.JPG

2) Casts pulled! One to test paint/color scheme and another to apply the final paint job to. All details are there; no fuss, no mess. The only exception being that the second bucket dried a bit faster so the back has some pockmarking. Minuscule but noticeable to someone like me.

005.JPG 008.JPG 006.JPG

No photos of the paint application but I'll go over it in the next, and most assuredly, final post on the matter. Stay tuned!

Re: X-Men: DOFP Magneto's Bucket v.2 - 1/20/15: 1st Casts Pulled

Awesome work man and way to hang in their despite setbacks!

It. Is. DONE! Quite a frustrating process to get to this point but a very educational one, nonetheless.

Painted in acrylics, a mixture of red-metallic, brown, "berry wine", copper, and sealed in a satin finish. No reference was used for the color; all from memory (I've stared at the bloody thing long enough).

I hate saying anything I do is accurate or the "best" but this could possibly be the most accurate fan reproduction of this helmet out there, now that this is done. Of course, that only means something to any who cares about this sort of thing, which I'm sure there are only few of now.

PICS!
