X-Men: Days of Future Past (Post-release)

First it was Fantastic Four and now X-Men. I also mentioned it on FB earlier how it's a deep rooted strategy so that the X-Men franchise and those characters don't have a cultural impact especially on the kids who are growing up without those toys, which is what bothers me more about it as they are being deprived of that opportunity on purpose. It's all business and commerce of course but still a nasty move on their part.
I could not agree more. Isn't Marvel kind of cannibalizing on themselves with this move though? I mean outside of the movies they still own all the characters. I realize comics, comic book themed toys, cartoon and non-movie merchandise are not as profitable as the movies, but still. Also, this might explain why we don't see a X-Men cartoon series anymore. On the other hand why do they promote Spider-Man with toys and cartoons? He is probably their most popular character, it would make sense to go after Sony as well. I think Marvel is afraid of the buzz that X-Men: DOFP is getting. I'm not sure if Avengers 2 will measure up, especially since they will be compared to DOFP just by using Quicksilver alone. comonbub Are you sure about the 3 years time frame? Fantastic 4 is still owned by Fox and the last one was in 2007. Maybe the contract is different, and I realize that Fox makes a new one about every 3 years, but I thought that was marketing not because they had to.

I don't find this dirty at all, just old fashioned playing hardball. The FF comics thing definitely seems like taking a hard stance against Fox, looks to me Marvel has just about had it with what they're doing with the FF reboot, and the Fox-Marvel relationship has been shaky in recent years already. Sounds like the FF publication numbers have been pretty poor lately anyway, so not a big loss to Marvel. If Marvel finds what Fox to be doing as brand damaging, they have every right to fight back with whatever means necessary.

I think we're only getting part of the picture from Liefeld on the X-Men toys though. Remember that Sony sold the Spidey merchandise rights back to Disney/Marvel, could be that Fox won't do the same and so Disney has no reason to push X-Men through its consumer products machine. Also it's not like prior X-Men films had a lot of licensed products, might just simply be for some reason licensees aren't that interested in this franchise. Companies like Hasbro typically do multi-year deals that would've been grandfathered in after Disney acquired Marvel, yet we haven't seen much if any toys for FC or DOFP; heck not even sure if Last Stand had many toys. If Marvel's actively keeping the X-Men toys license off the market, then this has been going on well before Disney came in the picture and before Marvel Studios became a big player.

Maybe the real story is that X-Men toys from the films just don't sell that well? The X-Men movies have been more geared towards adult audiences than Spider-Man and the Avengers anyway.

Exactly, it's going to affect them in the long run. They are hoping to acquire the franchise back and revive it. But to do that they are willing to let it remain in obscurity by any means necessary even if might affect the popularity of their comic counterparts. This also now explains the absence of Wolverine from the 75th Anniversary promo images.

Fox is not going to give up on X-Men franchise anytime soon, besides the next sequel there is the X-Force movie and Deadpool is bound to get fast tracked in few years. There were plenty of X-Men toys in 2000 when the first movie got released. Any kids who were not familiar with the characters from the comics and cartoons, got exposed to the characters through the movie and toys.

But yeah it definitely wasn't as popular as the Spider-Man and the recent Avengers merchandise. Sony and Marvel are indeed in better terms, besides reverting the merchandise rights there is speculation of Sony and Disney co-producing some of the future Spider-Man films.

All this likely could lead to Fox and Marvel/Disney negotiating new deals which would be more mutually beneficial.

Can't blame Marvel for wanting their properties back, not to mention that I feel like most of the fans would like to see them revert as well. It will be a long time coming but I think Fox would have to really bone up an X-Men movie (or two or three) for them to sell it back to Marvel.

I can actually see FF going back to Marvel within the next few years; unless Fox's next movie gets a lot of good buzz and performs strongly (which it probably won't, considering the weird casting and lingering memories of the last two), their sequel is dead in the water.

At that point Marvel just has to wait.

I'm kind of mixed on Marvel getting the rights to X-Men back, on one hand I would love to see Avengers vs. X-Men or Hulk fighting Wolverine like his first appearance, but on the other hand I like the tone of Fox's X-Men more then the Marvel Studios movies. I don't think they would mesh well, I feel like they would take X-Men back to it's bright colored costume days like the comics or cartoons. Don't get me wrong they could probably make it work, but I personally want it to stay more grounded. Also if Marvel Studios had X-Men, I'm not sure how often we would see a X-Men movie because Marvel Studios makes 2 films a year. Think about it would you guys rather see a summer with Captain America, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Guardians of the Galaxy all in theaters or a summer with only two of those titles? There are so many pros and cons to this issue.
On the FF reboot, I'm not a fan of the casting, but the writer doing the script is the same one that wrote DOFP. It could be better then we think it will be. It has to be better than the first 2....hopefully anyway. haha

After seeing Captain America's or should I say Captain Puerto Rico (referring to the flag on his god awful suit), I don't want to see it go back to them at least until after they're done with this franchise and are given a chance to reboot it. Marvel is nervous right now because DOFP made 500 mill in the first week, granted, it probably won't make a lot more than that but still, they know that people are watching these movies again now that FC, TW, and now this have restored faith that LS and Origins destroyed. Marvel Studios is shaking in its boots right now and they are trying everything they can to hurt profits of this film. Low blows in my opinion

Also, I see a lot of 'plot hole' remarks...Can anybody explain where there were any in this movie besides wolverine and stryker?

You do realize Marvel also makes money from DOFP ticket sales right? IIRC they had a profit participating deal for X2, so assuming the same agreement for DOFP they have financial incentive to see the film turn a good profit. Granted their end-game is to get their IP back, but in the short term they still want to make money.

I tackled some of the plot holes in the link that was posted earlier The 20 Biggest Mistakes in the X-Men Movies - CraveOnline
1. Professor X's Body:
Not a plot hole that is Patrick Stewart on the bed on the X-3 after credit scene. The commentary on the DVD confirms it is him and that it is Xavier’s twin. Also, it seems that his powers are somehow connected to his paralysis in DOFP so that might explain him in a wheelchair. What makes no sense is how he is walking and using his powers in the flashback in X-3 and X-O though, unless Beast perfected the formula.
2. Cyclops's Age: Cyclops is in high school in X-O, which means he is in the age range of 14-18. X-1 is set in 2005 according to the timeline and X-O ends in 1979. That would make his age 40-44. That is still kind of bad, but he isn’t 50.
3. Wolverine Remembers World War II: He also remembers Kayla because we hear him calling her name in his mind in The Wolverine when he wakes up in the chair. We see in DOFP, when Xavier looks in mind that he remembers Victor breaking his bone claws in X-O fight. So, he remembers more than just WW2, he could be regaining some of his memories, but it is hit and miss because he does not remember what he was doing in 1973.
4. Magneto's Helmet is Half a Century Old: Good point, Xavier should be able to remember the helmet. Also, another strange thing is that the helmet changes the movies, so it might be that Magneto makes new ones to keep up with Xavier’s growing powers. So it could be that when Xavier was connected to Cerebro his telepathy was strong enough and had the range to detect Magneto until he updated his helmet to the X-1 design.
5. Moira MacTaggert's Age: It is a hole, unless the movie version created a way to give humans powers like in the ultimate universe, but there is nothing to support this in the films.
6. There Are Two Emma Frosts: The issue isn’t that there are “two”, it is that Emma Frost (January Jones) dies between First Class and DOFP, so the Emma Frost in X-O can’t be the same character because the end of X-O is set in 1979. Emma (X-O version) and Kayla could be Emma Frost’s (First Class version) daughters. It would make sense since Kayla has telepathy and Emma (X-O) has the diamond skin.
7. Wolverine's Adamantium Claws Grow Back: Magneto would probably give him his metal claws back because he would need them to fight Sentinels; we see in the 70’s portion of DOFP, Wolverine can fight Sentinels with the bone claws, but it is hard for him. Also in X-2 Magneto remarks that he is one of 2 people that can manipulate adamantium
8. Wolverine's X-Rays: In the comics, Wolverine’s healing factor made a molecular change in the adamantium that resulted in admantium beta which functions like true adamantium, but does not inhibit the bone’s normal processes, so supposedly it heals as well if it was ever damaged (Which isn’t an issue since it seems more durable then the film version metal) which doesn’t make sense at all really. Wolverine even regrows his entire body with adamantium and all at one point (I’m not talking about the Marvel Civil War where he is reduced to a skeleton). It could be that the film version has adamantium beta as well, but it takes longer from the adamantium to “heal”. The whole metal “healing” is silly though, since his body treated it as a foreign substance and without his healing factor he has to take special drugs to combat the metal poisoning.
9. Magneto Didn't Help Build Cerebro: This is a big one. Since it has been revealed that Magneto has been imprisoned under the Pentagon for the JFK assassination which happened on November 22, 1963, and First Class ends in 1962. So, there is less than a year that Magneto could have helped Xavier build his Cerebro in the mansion, but Magneto helping Xavier build seems unlikely with the dialogue in DOFP.
10. Wolverine's Amnesia Timeline: Unless Xavier is just awful at reading Wolverine’s mind through his adamantium skull, this is an issue.
11. There Are Two Bolivar Trasks: This is like the Emma Frost thing, in the ORIGINAL timeline Mystique kills Trask, so I am not sure who that is in X-3. It can be viewed as a plot hole though.
12. Beast Invented the Mutant Cure: Beast did not invent a “cure”, it merely temporally suppressed powers if taken in large doses. This is explicitly said by Beast to Logan about Xavier using too much to suppress his powers. We also see Beast use a lot of it to fool the Sentinel into thinking he was human. In X-3 Beast is no longer hiding his blue form and could simply be surprised that someone find a way to completely suppress mutant powers, however we know now that the cure was not permanent.
13. There Are Two Sabretooths: Victor could have either mutated further naturally or due to Magneto or William Stryker. Magneto has a machine to turn humans into mutants, I’m sure he could have made one to increase mutant powers. The further mutation could have affected his memories. Also, Toad appears to be more mutated in X-1 than he was in DOFP.
14. Professor X’s age: This is a plot hole, the only way I can explain it is that Beast perfected his serum since Xavier is walking AND using his powers, but maybe a side effect could have been Xavier aged rapidly to a certain point kind of like how Beast become blue in First Class.
15. Wolverine Is Not Unique: Yes he is, he has the only one naturally to be able to survive the adamantium bonding process until Lady Deathstike that is which Strkyer points out in X-2. We see in Origins that Sabertooth, according to Styker, could not survive the process (which could have been the motivation to side Magneto if he could enhance his powers). In X-O, Stkyer also need Wolverine’s DNA for Deadpool.
16. When Professor X Met Magneto: This one was covered well in the link.
17. Kitty Pryde's New Powers: All I’m going to say is I wish this was explained, it could have been so simple to say she developed it has a side effect of her original powers.
18. Mystique's Age: Personally, I hate the plot point of a character losing their anti-aging power and then their age catches up with them. That basically means the whole time they are not actually healing age related damage but covering it up. They did it in The Wolverine and X-1 with Wolverine and it annoyed me because it doesn’t make sense.
19. Mystique's Powers: I think her shifting abilities only allow the Sentinels to use other powers that have been pooled from mutants. We see one that absorbs Colossus’s metal skin (Rogue), one with diamond skin (Emma Frost), and one using clawed fingers (could be Sabertooth or Lady Deathstrike).
20. Wolverine's Mind Doesn't Heal: Yes it does, in the comics Wolverine’s amnesia is partially due to his mind covering up tragic events to keep him mentally stable. As, I covered earlier he has regained some of this memory in the films which really isn’t a representation to his mind “healing”, but still.

I'm going to enjoy the movie regardless of point holes just as I enjoy The Avengers movies despite their mistakes, but some "plot holes" are just things that are not fully touched on in the films and I'm fine with that I don't need every plot point spoon fed to me.
Also, since Marvel gets money from the X-Men films reducing the popularity of the characters will only further hurt them, but as I stated earlier X-1, X-2, and X-O are the only ones to have toy lines anyway that I am aware of.

Anyway you look at it the X-men and the rest of the Marvel universe is so tied up to each other that we kinda HAVE to tie them together at some point,I think doing it when Thanos goes balls-to-the-wall is as good as any and you could explain the separation as a different reality or such (not like they haven't done this in the comics)

And I think if Marvel does get them back then we have a better chance at seeing a good Deadpool so....I'm all for it.

And it'd set up for a possible civil war series somewheres down the line-double win.

I finally saw this movie on Sunday and wow, hits X2 levels of awesome here. I loved pretty much everything about it. I'm so glad we got our restart and new canon that blended both the original trilogy and the new series together, and this was such an amazing sendoff to the old Xmen actors.

I had some major issues with First Class (I felt Magneto hadn't quite gelled; there was a lot of racism, intended or not, it felt really off). Had NONE of those issues with Future Past. And considering what they chose to select from the future and chose to rewrite from the future... I'm full of speculation right now. (X1 might still have occurred? X2, maybe only in part--definitely not Jean sacrificing herself--and X3 not at all!)

Kitty sending his mind back could be seen as a natural extension of her powers. She can already phase thru space, and space/time are one entity, so by now shes learned to phase thru time

Wolverine's memory is all there in his brain, but he can't access them. Xavier says he can't just open his mind up, and wants Logan to find stuff out for himself. Charles sees it all, and doesn't wanna break it to him that he was a crazy berserker for hire. And it does mean he can remember if he tries, or if he touches stuff from his past, which is all there in the movies and makes sense from what he told him in X2. The whole Origins can be taken any way you want it, it's all from his memory, which can be either be 60% correct, 60% incorrect, or totally ignored all together. That's why they should have left his memory out all together, and just fill in stuff as they go.

Then why are they attacking Fox?

Also to the other guy, a lot of people seem to forget that a lot of Wolvie's memories were unlocked at the end of X1 after he helped the Professor, also, just because somebody has amnesia, doesn't mean that they won't ever regain some of those memories, wolverine included.

Thirdly, Beast's human cameo in X2 is now explained with that serum of his.

Then why are they attacking Fox?

I think Liefeld's comments on Twitter may have been blown out of proportion, possibly misinformed even, with respect to the X-Men toys. Can't say Marvel is attacking Fox on X-Men but they don't seem to be actively supporting them either. If you look around there's some level of product support though very minimal, example being Under Armour's comic X-Men compression shirts released to coincide with DOFP and Diamond Select releasing a DOFP Mystique figure. I don't think the X-Men films (not comics) have been big sellers on consumer products, dating as far back as Last Stand; Wolverine being the only exception and he got a decent level of product support in his last solo movie. Sure Marvel could be more actively supporting the X-Men films, but strategically it actually makes more sense for them to focus on franchises they own outright, Spidey being the only exception (their biggest cash cow and they still own his cartoon series).

FF is a different story - I do believe Marvel is taking it to the mattresses on that one.

Just saw DOFP last night. Pretty awesome. Can't wait for another one.
Also thought it was cool they brought back the original theme music in the intro/credits.

The future sentinels were downright scary.

I need to look at her background... could Kitty do that in the comics or was that written for the movie?

Wolverine's memory is all there in his brain, but he can't access them.

I thought the whole thing at the end of Origins was that he got shot in the brain, which destroys brain tissue. It heals but his memory doesn't.
