X-Men 2 Carphone

inching forward:p...this is far from straight forward.. the black body is a pain to do in CAD

Wow, that looks really nice.
The black parts could just be scratchbuilt if they are too awkward. The side buttons for the pop-up part would be no problem to scratchbuild. The Central black area too could be scratchbuilt if the pieces you have drawn up were machined, even from acrylic just to give a base to work from.

Great Job!! The talent here on the RPF never ceases to amaze me.

I've always like this little prop. I think it could even make a cool belt buckle :confused

@ renaissance... I'm gonna have a go at trying the black area today. I just wish i knew how deep the side buttons are. I guess i could just make it up as long as the overall dimensions stay the same.. i must remember to leave some clearance room:D

Thanks titanium:)... hmmm it could make a cool belt buckle

This may not look like much but damn did it take a long time to do!.. everything is now shelled to accommodate the internal workings. That black piece is slotted into the top and bottom section. So the hard part to figure out is over, the rest should be straight forward.

Im thinking of getting a prototype printed up, anyone want one to play about with?:)

That's going to be an awesome build! I'll take a metal-cased cell phone over plastic any day!! No way that thing's gonna get crushed while its carried around...

Do you have a price quote for one to be printed up?
It would be good to get one in hand to see how it feels, it would give us an idea of whether anything needs to be tweaked slightly.

You're AWESOME Jay!!! :thumbsup

I just ordered mine this morning and should be hear Nov 21st. I can't wait to get this little guy in my hand.

Holy Crap that's awesome! The only thing I noticed after reviewing the 3D model is the 2 hex screw holes that are located on the outer portion, side button areas as seen in the first post.

lol i cant believe you order it already!.. there is still lots to do and i didnt take into consideration the shapeways material when i chosose th shelling thickness.. u sir are crazy in impulsive:p... I wish i had a set now! haha.. I'm looking forward to the feedback on the shape and fits.

@Tony... That model is still unfinised.. I have still to put in those 2 parts which cover the black area. The hex bolt holes will be located on those... Titanium got in there before i could actually finish it:p hahaha

I noticed shapeways make parts in silver..owwww.. now that would be a fancy phone!

What ... me impulsive :unsure OK ... maybe :lol I had some money on shapeways and thought it would be nice to have some feed back on the over all shape and size. Sure I know it's not complete ... but can't we all use a spare. Besides I still like the belt buckle idea. :)

I'll post pics and feed back as soon as I get.

Keep up the great work Jay!

Ah...unfinished. Got it. Belt buckle you say....that sounds like a great alternative if the phone thing fails. :lol

Very cool man:).. looking forwad to seeing it in the flesh.

Does anyone want to make a start on trying to find a sliding mechanism that will work on this phone?... i think we will need something a little more complicated than a normal spring loaded slider

Jay - I have some thoughts on a sliding mechanism but I was waiting to get the pieces from shapeways to see what works best. I'll try to get something "sketched" up in the mean time.

I'm almost tempted to buy one and cobble something (sturdy and reliable) together that might work. I'd have to trek over to the electronics store though.

Once the shapeway is finalized, I'll buy one and figure it out.
