WWII X-wing pilot for star wars CVII Finished.

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

Agreed. It is true that the twilek pinup is overdone. I was using vintage pinup art as inspiration, and simply adding x-wing pilot details (tall black boots, orange pants, white corset with chestbox). I didn't do a lot of star wars pinup searching as I didn't want to copy anything.

OT but I got the rebel wings pin today. It's perfect, and will help complete the overall look. I'll post pictures over the weekend of some of my progress on the jacket.

Your girl looks great. She should inspire a lot of the male pilots, and maybe some female ones.

Glad the wing pin made it safely.

Ever consider a crush cap with your costume?

I have considered the crusher cap. The only problem is dyeing the hat orange. I was going to bleach my pants and hat white, then dye them orange to match the flightsuits. But recently I realized that the bright orange might be a little too vibrant. So I think I'm going to just dye my pants and hat while they are still khaki colored, so that way the orange is more of a darker earthy tone. I'll do some experiments with a khaki garrison cap I got recently if this works out I might get a crusher cap and go with that. Also get a large gold rebel insignia pin to put on the crusher cap.

Here's a quick picture of the wings, and rogue squadron patch on the left sleeve.

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

Very nice! What kind of paint are you using on the leather?

May I ask why you are going shirt pants combo (bomber pilot style) instead of going with a flight suit (fighter pilot style)?

BTW: I love these custom figures which reminds me a lot of this topic.

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

This is a great build, and one on my bucket list. Cannon or not, rock what you like, I think what you got done so far is great. play around with colors and you don't have to settle on the blaze orange of the flight suit, maybe a redish kahki or nutria brown color for the pants, but again in the end its what ever you like bro lol

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

Hahaha, and I had no idea about a Twi'lek pinup girl being used throughout already by a show or fans(although I would believe the latter before the former). I just threw it out there trying to help. Now I kinda feel like Butters from South Park, "Aww shucks fellas" :facepalm lol.

*I'll turn in my SW fan card now since this shows I didn't watch much of Clone Wars either* lol

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

Thanks everybody for the encouragement and the suggestions. There's a lot of points I didn't even consider until you all brought them up.

finally some updates. I got my nametape I went with the rank of Captain as it fits in star wars (antilles, needa, rex) and the abbreviation is easily recognizable.

Also started on the final back details. Got the tagline finished, and painted the base colors for the pinup girl. I might add some x-wings to fill in the empty spaces on either side of the pinup.

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

Sort of surprised that you did not go with Commander (CDR) since that was the only rank you was ever referee to Luke in the OT.

Also for the sake of discussion and using US military references, Rex was. Capt. Or as you might know it, an O3 pay grade. Needa and Antillies was CAPT or O6. This is the same as Colonel outside of the Navy.

Captain in the Navy is also in reference to position. For instance, in the Navy, even if the commanding officer of ship is CDR, it is proper to refer to that person as a Captain. This is the case with Solo as he commands a ship.

painting is coming along nicely. :thumbsup

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

I forgot to ask, what kind of paints are you using and are you going to use any kind of protective finish ?

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

Never realized that the difference of the position of Captain between army, and navy applied in the star wars universe. I thought about using Commander, but I felt CDR would have been less recognizable than CAPT. Also I liked the look of CAPT, more than CDR.

The paint i'm using are just regular acrylic paints made for canvas. It's adhering to the leather quite nicely, and is quite flexible. I would like to get some nice leather paint for my next jacket though. I have some satin sheen leather finish that I might use as a protective finish.

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

I'm a fiend for flight jackets, I have way more than any one person should (wore my 'Still the Right Stuff' Apollo blue flight jacket today).
As there's almost no leather clothing anywhere in the original trilogy, I was thinking of doing something like this until i stumbled across this thread.
What I was thinking is something along the lines of X-wing pilot wear. Think MA-1 with an orange outside:

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

Received my radio headset today. Doesn't look anything like the headset pictured on ebay, but it still fits the aesthetic. I'm going to repaint the green plastic to a white with the circle design on the sides of luke's x-wing helmet. Here's a couple pics of everything I have so far. Any thoughts?

Also, I'm almost done with the back of the jacket. Just few details. I'll put up some pics soon.

p51- I love flight jackets as well, my next jacket purchase will probably be the blue apollo flight jacket.

Re: WWII X-wing pilot for star wars celebration.

Finally Finished!!!
I bought the crusher cap, and dyed the pants and hat with some rit orange dye. It ended up with a light earthy orange tone that was a good balance of star wars & real world.
Here's a pic of me wearing everything.
IMG_1218.JPG

I repainted the headset to be reminiscent of the x-wing helmet, by painting it white and adding the circle detail seen on the sides of x-wing helmets.

Finished the pinup. This isn't a great photo, due to the reflective leather. She was a challenge, trying not to paint too much detail that she ends up being ugly, but enough detail that it looks like a person.

Here's a pic of the hat and pants to see where the color ended up.

I'll get some better pics soon to submit for the costume contest. Any thoughts?

Thanks everybody. I agree, the crusher cap goes better with the jacket. Hopefully, I can get some better pics soon.
