Would like to have a Y-wing?

Hi there.

All these models being built on this site is really driving me crazy. I've gotta say I'm really impressed!

My modeling skills are getting fairly good and I'd like to work on a Y-wing fighter. I thought about starting a scratch build, but I don't think I'll have the resources (hobby shops/money) to buy all the kits to bash. I also think I'd need some members to guide me through the entire process. I could see myself getting really annoying to some.:lol

My one option is to see if there are any fan made Y-wing kits that are worth picking up. The other would be to look around for the Fine Molds kit and modify it, but the scale would be on the small side.

Anyway if any members could please give me some reviews on some available kits (Fine Molds or other) that would be great (I'm sure a lot of you will tell me a scratch build is out of the question due to the lack of funds I can put towards kit bashing).

Thanks.

Hi There

SMT did a 1/48th Y wing,..I think Alfred Wong did the patterns. They were put out again recently by Blue Moon. I'm not sure where you'd get one, but starship modeller did stock the blue moon stuff. I've had a look but it doesn't look like they have it now. You could ask over there though.

It's not 100% accurate, but I have one from the old SMT days, and it builds into a nice model.

Good luck with your search

Cheers

What Phil said, there is the SMT or repopped Bluemoon in 1/48, and they pop up on Ebay from time to time. The FM kit is tiny at 1/72, but builds into a nice model, and is very (not patronising you lol) noob friendly.

Not sure if it will ever happen, but you never know when a 1/48 FM Y wing would be on the cards.

To go Larger (studio scale).......Steve Neisen (swpropmaker) is to release a studio accurate Red Jammer soon....hope that helps.

Hi there, I was at a model shop over the weekend and saw the Revell snap kit of a Y-wing. I did a bit of research... $23 -$26 and it's about 8.6" (I'm not sure what scale that would be. Isn't that the same size as the Ertl kit back in the 80's?).

Anyway I wanted to see what other members thought about the kit. Is it worth picking up and customizing or should I just pass on it?

Start saving now for the Neisen Y-Wing. I have seen the Bluemoon and its nice, but definitely not worth writing home about. I'm sure Steve will do an excellent job, but you will have to pay for this quality. I'm not certain about the price, but I would imagine it would be around the 500 dollar mark (maybe even more). If you think about building your own by kitbashing, I am certain you will spend that amount on donor kits plus have a lot of frustration with the cockpit and engines.

I picked up the FM Y-Wing and yes...it is tiny.

I'm building (slowly) a 1/16 version myself. I'm sure I have spent at least a thousand dollars on donor kits (sometimes just using one part from them). If I was to do it over again, I would get the SS kit. BTW my version is about 1 metre long.

Good luck with your dilemma.

Another option is the Fine Molds kit, I've heard a lot of good things about their kits and despite coming from Japan the prices seem to be pretty reasonable, Hobby Link Japan has it for a little more than $36 although that price can go up or down depending the value of the dollar vs. the yen.
