Working Tricorder- City on the Edge of Forever

This was a quick project that Margaret and I did for Philip's party yesterday. This was a proof of concept and is by no means exact. We grabbed the Diamond Select tricorder, dremelled out the interior, rewired the moire, and added an mp3 player. A bit of video editing/splicing and the screen showed the alternate timelines from the episode. We used old wire, capacitors, and a handful of old radio tubes (201A 4" tubes- some RCA and some Cunningham) for the stone knives and bear skins. We wanted something that was easily recognizable but perhaps not the size of a room.

All in all, very fun project and came in about $110 for all parts (not including the extra mp3 player. Also, second project Margaret and I did together (after Nomad- WIP). Awesome fun.

I think I took some video of this prop on Saturday. I'll try to upload the video tonight if it's any good (the footage I mean, the prop was awesome ! )

I love it! That is one of my favorite TOS episodes. And it was the working screen that really got me hooked on tricorders. And over 40 years later I am still building tricorders and I still love that episode.

Thanks for sharing this with us. :thumbsup

I saw this at Philip's party, and must have stared directly at it for 5 minutes straight. I asked around, but wasn't able to find the owner to ask some questions.

I loved how you included the static between the scene cuts! It looked EXACTLY like an old B&W CRT.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Not sure if anyone else would want to build one of these. If I can get my webguy to host the raw video footage for download (that was on the little screen but at the original 720x480), would that be of use to anyone? It's too large a file for photobucket think (around 40-50 meg). Doubt a tutorial would be necessary or helpful but the most troublesome part was pulling just the video screen off the original footage and splicing.
