Wolverine Cowl- Comic Style- Foam Build

Moving forward with the wolverine build finally. I added the white out comic style eyes to the cowl, made a partial duck tape dummy to paint my morph suit on, and started painting my morph suit. I may have went a little too far with the musculature painting compared to most of the classic comic style wolverine drawings, but it will work I suppose. There is still a lot more to accomplish before it is completed, but this is what I have done so far. Contemplating the heavy black comic shading in the darkest areas on the suit as well to complete the look...comments, questions?

The completed cowl... I ended up using a summer baseball cap mesh for the eyes. The other materials I looked into were too difficult to see through and visibility is key when walking through a crowd with six knives in your hands. :)

Going to use a different strategy for the blue stripes due to not being pleased with the way the painted stripes turned out.

i need to get new knives, how foam manages to dull them so quick is a mystery.

Here's my first one, kinda rushed it just to see if it fit, it didnt, i increased 10% and rushed another one and thats now too big :lol

Also rush rushed out an iron man helmet in 2 nights. its pretty ugly but i want to practice my gluing before buying some plastazote.

JFcustom posted a while back that using a regular knife sharpener prolongs blade life for Xacto knives quite a while on his thread. Made sense, and sure enough, blade life was prolonged for me by about 10 times the normal life span before I had to dispose of them. HUGE SAVINGS on blade purchases! Buy you a cheap one and try it out. FYI I usually have to touch up my blade every 10-20 cuts to keep clean edges on the foam.

I have a suggestion on your blue stripes. IronJoe did his Symbonite Spiderman costume and used and iron on type bonding and then stitched it in place. It came out looking pretty Awesome in my opinion. I believe it comes in all colors and might be a solution to your problem. I love the way you've done the airbrushing so far. Subscribed so when I make my suit I can have a guide, just plain cool......
Are you going to keep the full suit to include the arms, or are you going to cut them off to expose your arms? Just curious...

Thank you for the suggestion. I am down to the last couple days of crunch time (2 days left to finish) ....out of time...and going with painted 1/16" foam for the stripes glued to the suit. That would have been ideal for the stripes had I not committed to the foam already. I am doing a base coat of paint, then painting in the muscle details on top of the stripes.

To answer the second part...I wanted to keep the sleeves attached and airbrush them flesh tone with muscle details etc. I found out that the yellow was near impossible to cover up with the flesh tone paint so I am forced to cut the sleeves off and use a pair of gloves for the hands and forearm areas. This will cut completion time down, but alters the original "envisioned plan" some. This will deviate from the stylized comic book looking skin, but it can't be helped at this point. In the famous words of Peek73, "If you never fail, do you truly succeed?"... ;)It will be completed in the next two days for Wizard Con in St. Louis, MO I promise!

Take lots of pic's at the Con....I just went to the Emerald City Con and had a blast. I so wish I had taken more photos, but I spent to much time posing for them. Made me feel like a super hero let me tell ya. So looking forward to seeing your completed costume, big time comic book Wolverine fan here......

I completed my Comic style Wolverine costume just in time for Wizard Con St. Louis this past weekend as promised. This was my first Comic Con and it was a great experience with hundreds of photo ops with little kids and big kids alike. It was awesome to see the look on kids faces when they saw their favorite character walking by. Definitely be doing this again in the future. I have a couple more pics on my facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/matt.healy.501?ref=tn_tnmn

*NOTE* The con would not let me in with my metal claws, so I was forced to do a last minute impromptu build of claws from my wife's Maurice's shoe box. Thankfully I thought ahead and brought my repair kit (hot glue gun, extra glue sticks, Xacto knife, extension cord, velcro, and unfortunately the box I was carrying all of this in). I used the metal claws for a template and cut the claws out, primered, and painted at the hotel. I had major problems with bent claws after a couple hours of people bumping into or shoving in the crowd, but ended up sturdying the claws up at the base by shoving toothpicks inside the cardboard...Worked like a charm for the duration of the con.

Here is the backside of the suit just after completion. I chose to use 1/16" foam for the stripes, boots, and claw "guards" on the gloves.

My epic battle of THOR ODINSON vs WOLVERINE....I won ;)

There was an R2D2 builders vendor that I couldn't resist doing a little genre mixing with. I had a couple people comment they thought that I was a cardboard cut out when standing still....I took it as a compliment.

Now that I have completed my Wolverine build, I am looking toward future projects. I will work on my WIP Iron Man Mk 42 build as time allows, but for now I am going to focus on Comic Style Magneto and a Comic Style Sabertooth builds. I was unsure about the whole spandex "thing", but after sporting Wolverine all weekend I look forward to the challenges of different costumes.

>Until the next time RPF...

JDF featured you on his FB page, ha. He's obsessed with Wolverine

Jason David Frank was one of the judges at the competition. He stopped me to pose for a picture before leaving the stage. He also took a picture of BSD in his cyberman. I took it as a compliment because he didn't take but just a couple pictures while on stage. He seemed pretty cool.

One of my coworkers really loved my Wolverine build and decided to do some photoshop work to a picture. I loved it and thought that I would share with the rest of the group.

Coming soon to a theater near you..... lol

I'm going to start a foam build of the cowl. And before I print out the template I wanna make sure that I scale it out properly. How tall is yours from the chinstrap to the top of the "ears"?

Thank you very much to the OP for inspiring me to make my cowl. You did an amazing job. I had to rush everything and paint my cowl before I could finish blending the seams but I was still satisfied with the end result. I still want to go back and try and airbrush everything like you did. I did black ears though, because I was doing Astonishing Wolverine as opposed to classic.

Awesome Job! Looks great. If you airbrush shadows, just stick with the simple rule of three shades and you are golden.

I'm looking to do this and have about a month to knock it out. Two questions. First, what type of foam did you use? I initially grabbed stuff from Michaels or Hobby lobby but it's super thin and the sheets aren't large enough to make the head portion of this. Second, how did you get the head to be so round given all the seems that make up that portion of the build?

I used 1/4" cross-linked close-celled polyethylene sheets (4'x8' sheets) that I found online. I can't remember the site off the top of my head, but I think I referenced it on the rpf so search for my posts. I used 90° cut angles on the foam and carefully spliced it together with super glue. Reference Cullen cosplay for great foam tips. He is a wizard.

Good luck with your build! Post a pic here when you get it done!
