WIP first Iron Man Mark III (plastic-coated) foam build: Getting a bit pic heavy

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

sections like top of helmet/ faceplate youll know when its ploshed by the way it feels it'll be smooth. this process is for smoothin out texture/ orange peel. It feel like the paint on a brand new car that smooth. ince I get ti my pad I'll post pics to explain better, and classes? hmmm maybe lol :)

By the way I just want to be clear, the poor texture I have is down in the primer layer, for some reason I thought I had sanded it down good after I dropped the faceplate, but apparently not. Polishing will even ALL layers out right? you love my endless questions admit it

Well man I did as instructed, though when I sanded it took some parts around "mountain" areas back down to the primer with little effort. And I think the texture is too deep for a polish to fix, because the polish still left behind some valleys.

It's totally fine though, your recommendations are great, I think it will work well after I put a new filler primer+paint+clearcoat back over it. In the "good" spots, the wetsanding with the 2000 grit really does get a great surface!

So, about the rest of the helmet... (the above mentioned stuff is only referring to the faceplate) it looks great but I did get some orange peeling when I did the clearcoat. I assume the wetsand+2000+polish+wax method would work for that eh? or is the wax even necessary? I'm told that waxing pretty much is your final finish, sealing in any imperfections correct? looking forward to finishing it!

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

wax/seal is for protection, the wetsanding of clearcoat will take off orange peel n smooth out eveything, let me know how it goes:)

light polishing then if u want to wax/seal for added protection. mayb try it on a scrap piece, like doin all the steps so ya can get a better feel for it. I just dont want ya to ruin your helmet. And if your not confident you can just leave it cuz it looks good already lol so practice before touchin your awesome suit k dude :lol ya can always polish later :)

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

Could you post a link to the templates you used?

And here is the back and Chest I used, and I think the neck as well.

http://www.therpf.com/f24/dancin_fool-iron-man-mark-iii-pepakura-foam-135202/

hope that helps dude! You could just use JF's files if you wanted, and again ALL of them are a different edit of DancinFool's original pep files made for foam. JFCustom also has the mark IV and VI on that first link, which look perdy.

The major difference is the simplified version in JF's files. You will need to add certain details if you wish. anyway good luck, dig your username too haha(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

ok here we go with an update:

the abs, cod, lower back biceps, shoulders, and upper forearms are now complete. I ran out of primer on the shoulders, and decided to use a much darker primer. *******. the finish is amazng but they are too dark. I'm going to have to sand, reprime, and paint the shoulders again... but you can see how nice the finish is!

I'm very much getting the hang of the plasticizing and painting, and CLEARCOATING is huge. unfortunately I'm now almost done except for elbows, hands, and the sides of the feet (not pictured).

By the way I forgot to take a pic of the dang abs, I will tomorrow though. They look crazy good... I'm pumped to try this whole thing on when it all cures. Then I just have to connect everything and do the little circular hinge covers. IT NEVER ENDS

I'm very happy with the results... I wish I had more time, I wouldn't have to rush everything. Suit up coming soon let's hope(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Here's some pics:

Haaa love that you were the first to respond. Thanks man couldn't have done it without ya bro. It's getting there for sure. I almost hate to dirty it up with the black acrylic haha

you have to see it together with the chest piece it looks crazy. don't know how soon it'd be safe to try the whole thing on...:confused

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

This is looking so sweet mate..
You are maybe rushing your build but I feel like I'm taking my time a bit to much :lol
Still building my fingers but hopefully I'll catch up to you.
Nice to see this is coming along really beautifully.
