WIP first Iron Man Mark III (plastic-coated) foam build: Getting a bit pic heavy

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

as far as flexibility, nothing is going to flex without cracking the paint a little... unless you use paint for fabric/rubber that was meant for it....but they dont make any red that works for the suit. Automotive paint is the only viable solution most of the members have found. (I am new on here, but the last 3 months i've read almost EVERY thread about ironman at work lol) Its flexible for movement, not backbends or wrestling or anything. PM me if you find anything that works better

Wow, this is a great thread. As always learned a ton by checking it out. Thanks to everybody who shares the knowledge with the noobs.

Thanks man! and thanks to everyone else as well. My original idea was to get some people talking about the most basics to foam building that are not easy to find answers to. I guess there is a bit of that in here haha(y)thumbsup Good luck man

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

Well guys it's about to get pic heavy here... pretty much finished up the chest and upper back today whilst studying... I'll type more about it soon, I just wanted to get the pics on here.

I will be narrowing it down pic wise... it is extremely difficult to give a sense of the color, texture, and sheen of the paint, etc. with an iPhone, so I just included them all at first here. plus I'm kind of proud of this pup for my first attempt at costumin'. This is the chest and back, same method as before... PVA+321+adhesion promoter+filler primer+valspar gold+barcelona red metallic. dang pleased with the results! So here it is so far...

with clearcoat: Might add another layer. again it's tough to make out, but the paint actually looks much more metallic IRL

Mannn thanks dude that's encouraging coming from you. I'm pretty happy with it so far!

Hey man I was about to ask... do you (or anyone else here reading this) have any suggestions for adding little dark gray dirt stuff around some of the edges? Like this:

you might have to look closely, it's pretty subtle but you can notice it in the films too.

if ya look closely at mine i do that too, what u do is get some black acrylic paint thin it down with some water brush it into the crevices, let dry then get damp paper towel or rag then wipe n the black will stay n itll give it more depth hope it helps man :)

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

if ya need help on dry brushin I can help ya too man if interested

ahhh cool duhh i should have though of that. I was thinking of different "dirt materials" to use haha and didnt even think of paint.

I should be ok with the actual brushwork, but I'll let you know!

so acrylic can go right on top of the clear coat? I guess if it ends up coming off here and that's probably not a bad thing.

By the way, where does your paint experience come from? Thanks once again man

Adam grumbo had a tutorial also on YouTube on how to weather armor. I don't have the link on me right now but you might be able to go

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

acrylic is waterbased so ya can take off what ya need then light clear coat over it. Lol got my experience just from painting when i was younger. So let me know I can show ya some tricks to get metal look too, I got yr back buddy lol

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

I meant to say you might be able to google it. He did it with halo armor. Good tutorial

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

Yep I do believe there are lots of drybrushing tutorials over at youtube. I'm sure you can pull this one off, considering the work you've done with the chest and back. Lookin' good pal! :thumbsup
