WIP first Iron Man Mark III (plastic-coated) foam build: Getting a bit pic heavy

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

Thanks for lookin out guys. love this forum.

Mizuno, that's some good stuff there! I'll keep it simpler to begin with, we'll see how much time I have. Thanks very much dude the dirt looks easy!

Doc, how do you mean "metal" look? You mean other than the metallic finish in the duplicolor I assume :thumbsup I'm always looking forward to what you have cookin' dude

quo, you're the man dude thank you! I've actually done years of drybrush work, long story...haha

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

God this is looking fabulous.. I remember when we were at the same step with our builds and now you are like miles ahead from me :lol
You did a really beautiful job mate, hope mine will do justice to yours :)

By the way, do you plan to cut your chest/back or you can actually slip it on like a shirt?

haha thank you man, yours will be great you'll see. It very much matters how it looks before the paint, and yours is extremely well made.

It does slip on like a shirt, but not so easily:) So I did cut on the side rib on the right side where it meets the back piece, and will connect it with 2 plastic fasteners, perhaps even 2 inch heavy velcro.

There are still several small things I have to go back and do haha (y)thumbsup

Oh you found the video okay? I wasn't refereeing to the entire video, just when he starts using acrylics to dirty the armor then metallics for scratches. I wouldn't dirty the entire armor the way he does though cause you'll lose a lot of shine from the clear coat. Docholliday put some vids on his thread and check out indiefilmgeek's build for his son. His weathering was really nice.

Looking good Kurtis. I had to push my project back a little. Hoping to have for next year. In the meantime your build and the others on the RPF will be a great help when I ramp up again.

Ok got the helmet painted today. but we have a slight problem.

this really sucks, but as I was priming the faceplate, I accidentally knocked it off the stand, and it landed face down. I understandably had to sand it back down, with 500 grit, but apparently it wasn't enough. Once the clearcoat began to dry, tiiny little imperfections came out, very tough to see in the photo, but apparently is enough to show texture that is kins of annoying.

So the question is... should I, or is it possible, to sand all the way back down to the primer or onyx? I suppose I'd have to sand the whole thing back down to the bottom layer, or should I use some kind of paint thinner, etc? any tips from the pros?

It's coated in adhesion promoter, filler primer, 2 layers valspar gold, then 2 layers krylon triple thick clear glaze. advice pleease! Thanks guys(y)thumbsup

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

by the way, if sanding is the deal, which grit would be best to start and finish with? thanks dudes

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

ok here's a close up, it's maybe hard to tell, but its still rough under there a little. more annoying than anything...

but, with the rest of the suit maybe it won't be so bad, I just think its going to bother me foreva

This is looking REALLY great!

It's really good to see some good examples of the pva/smooth-cast method prior to starting my Victorian version armor.

You're doing a GREAT job! I can't wait to see the final suit-up! :popcorn

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

how I do my fiberglass work and painting after clear I give it some days to cure then wetsand with 2000 grit get it til has a hazy dull look the get some good rubbing compound then start rubb/buff it in. After ya do that wax a good kind I forgot the brand I use but when i get home i can tell ya but wax it up n you should have a mirror like finish n that texture should be gone. :) hope it helps ya dude n by the way suited up looks freagin cool dude good job

Thank you man! I'm glad you like it...I'm definitely pleased so far!

Yeah the PVA/plastic route ended up working best for me, I also just get a better finish overall with it, with NO cracking so far, and minimal creasing.

I'd say do at least 3 layers of 1:3 water to elmer's, preferably more, and at LEAST 2 thin layers of the 321 (or 65D, whatever you choose). The challenge then is to keep the PVA layers smooth and even, as well as the plastic. you'll see what I mean, it's actually a bit of a challenge.

The chest piece actually ended up with some teeny tiny little air bubble hole things, but they don't take away too much from the total finish. I'll know what to do better next time. I'm also under time constraints, so that's kind of a bugger too. TAKE your TIME with it! have fun man looking forward to your work

Cool man when I first screwed it up I feel like I sanded forever with a 500 grit, which didn't seem to fix it. I guess wetsanding might do the trick...

-What is a good rubbing compound to use?
-and yes, let me know what wax you suggest. Thanks very much as usual doc... time to operate (y)thumbsup

Re: WIP first Iron Man Mark III foam build+knowledge share

Kurtis,

What files did you use exactly, I love your build. The back doesn't look like the mark vi back that Stealth posted in his thread.

Thanks man!

you can get 3m stuff is when im doin a job but for myself since Im cheap lol i just use turtle polishing compound the turtle wax cuz with that stuff ya can do by hand with the 3m is better with rotary buffer but maje sure its a polishing compound not rubbing cuz rubbing is more for oxidation. so even if ya wetsand with 3000 but never sand paint with anything more coarse than 1500. polishin will smooth out defects in paint job real good n make sure you dont let compound dry polish as u go n work in sections so ya dont burn paintjob n once u get it polished wax it n if u did it right n im positive u will your paint job will look like glass n believe me youll be shocked of how it will look. good luck :)

hey man, thanks very much!

This is the mark iii first of all, it is mostly JFcustom's revision "for speed" which were originally DancinFool's mark iii files. The biceps are DF's mark iii for foam, and the chest and back are Stealth's DancinFool edits. haha I hope that made sense!

Here's the JFcustom thread, it also has some great foam tips. Dude's amazing:

For the others, just look them up in the search... I could probably dig them up if you need me to

ok man, let me see if I have this straight... that was very stream of consciousness:)

1.) wet sand with the 2,000 until it's dull.
2.) Turtle wax polish in small sections
3.)Wax.

a few questions about that:

1.) how "small of sections" do you mean, when I polish?
2.) how will I know when I've polished enough? that is, is that the stage when you can tell that the paint has evened out? I don't know what it means to "burn" the paint job.

Thanks in advance doc, you ought to start some classes on this haha! (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

sections like top of helmet/ faceplate youll know when its ploshed by the way it feels it'll be smooth. this process is for smoothin out texture/ orange peel. It feel like the paint on a brand new car that smooth. ince I get ti my pad I'll post pics to explain better, and classes? hmmm maybe lol :)
