WIP first Iron Man Mark III (plastic-coated) foam build: Getting a bit pic heavy

Re: WIP first Iron Man foam build+knowledge share

Hahah thanks man, but it just may be the pictures covering up blemishes. There are other suits way better. Oh yeah, and what's wrong with blue? Hhaha Tony Stark can have blue armor!

I actually just bought a sheet to test out but I haven't worked with it yet =P...Looks like the material you're working with is getting some pretty good results though. I've been working on making more casts of my helmets so I haven't had time to test.

Man I love the blue! just meant technical-wise. that suit is my new favorite. :cheers

let me know about the rubber stuff... by the way what is the name of it? I can't find it anywhere

Re: WIP first Iron Man foam build+knowledge share

Good Job Kurt! Suit is coming along very well! Sweet ;)

man thank you that means a lot coming from you. I'm happy with it for a first build for sure. It'll look even better with a Pannaus lid on top:)

Dude, your work is functional art. Seeing your builds got me started on my own, so a special thanks to you man. I hope you keep it up for a loong time. By the way your new site looks great! Excited to see what you have in store for the future! (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

on the feet to make sure you don't slid. get some hard rubber mat and cut piece of it to put on the bottom of the suit feet. same stuff used in dress shoe on the bottom they dont slid.

Oh ok man thanks, I actually might not have "bottoms" to my boots, I think my foam might just surround a pair of tennis shoes on the sides and top. If I do though, I'll take that into consideration thanks!

Thanks! I like to make "different" things vs the common colors.

This is where I got it. Honestly though it looks just the best step mats. I'll see if there's any difference when I test it.

Re: WIP first Iron Man foam build+knowledge share

thats a great build bro, would imagine that the foam is much lighter than the paper amd fiber glass aproach

Re: WIP first Iron Man foam build+knowledge share

this is really starting to come together now. Looking forward to the "Suit up" when the time comes

Nice to see a Foam Mark III

Ok cool thanks! I've sent them an email. Which thickness ad weight did you get? Man if it's similar to the eva (in fact one of these says its an eva blend), but easily paintable, that would make all the difference in the world

man thank you! I'm actually not sure if it's any lighter, this is my first build. I will say after the plastic coating and painting/finishing, I'm not sure if it's any faster hahaa (y)thumbsup

Thanks man! your work has been inspiring and of course endlessly helpful. So a big thanks to you too dude... I'm a fan of your work haha

y'all might have to bear with me for the finalizing, school is about to get intense :confused but it will happen! Thankfully no major glitches yet

2lb 1/4 inch i think?

Re: WIP first Iron Man foam build+knowledge share

Hmmm now that i think about it maybe i should have picked up the 3lb since it's more dense

Re: WIP first Iron Man foam build+knowledge share

ok here's the neck... just getting little bits done while I study.

2 things:
-I used a different method for flexibility:docholiday78's modpodge, plastidip, adhesion promoter, filler primer, paint, clearcoat for more flexibility, as I had finally made a "successful" attempt on scrap.
-after I started working on the neck, letting stuff dry, I went back to that scrap that had been curing for 3 days, and sure enough, it started to crack. dang. So we'll see how it holds up.

it has a slightly different texture, but I kind of dig it. it's on 2mm craft foam.

where the chin moves their. you might want to shape it a bit just encase when moving you head up and down, left to right.

Re: WIP first Iron Man foam build+knowledge share

awesome ! would have liked to see all this knowledge before my own build :/ but it will surely help me for my next one ;)
cant wait to see it done :)

I appreciate that thank you!

I learn from my mistakes as I go... pretty much:) as in just today, I forgot to do the silver underpainting on a part, but I kind of like the gold better. we'll go with the gold!

Re: WIP first Iron Man foam build+knowledge share

Me and my buddy watched all of the Tut vids from xrobots, stealth, etc...and everything is awesome EXCEPT Smooth-on 65D!!! Xrobots made it look so easy in the video, but we are havig a terrible time with the 65D. No matter what you do, it goes on super thin, but needs a lot of difficult sanding...I personally think yours looks great, but beware of the 65D. He's pretty well versed in painting and filling and such, and he's having a hard time. We both have stuck with 4 layers of MOD podge (diluted 3:1) 2-3 layers of plasti-dip, adhesive promotor, primer, paint, and lots of clearcoat. not bad at all. Nice work!

Man by the way I meant to ask you.... So using this method u didn't have any problems with cracking? And how smooth was the finish afterward? I'm really only thinking about using it on the abs but I rrrrrreally don't want to f them up as they are from scratch. Thanks man!
