WIP: Darth Nihilus Sculpt

Hey guys,

Here is my progress on my Darth Nihilus sculpt. I have about 3 hours into it. I took some liberties on the original design, but I went for the COTF version instead of the KOTOR style.

Though I'm not a big fan of klean clay for sculpting, I had twenty pounds sitting around so I used it. I'm going to refine the eyes and fix the proportions a bit and then cast a prototype. It will be a lot easier to fix everything when it is cast because the klean clay is WAY too soft at room temp. Any input or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

It may look weird because the nose of the armature is crooked and has a 20 degree slant to the right.

Looks really cool so far!

If you want to harden it up some, you can stick it in the fridge or freezer. Freezer will make it rock hard.

I was thinking the same thing, but I hot glue my busts to pieces of wood so it is too big to fit in there.

I completely redid the eyes and "mouth" area this morning. I think it looks TONS better. I'll probably try to get in in a fridge, smooth it out, and make a quick prototype mold this weekend.

Worked on it for about 45 minutes this morning. I feel like it is a bit too narrow. What do you guys think?

Did a bit more because I got off work early. I bulked out the eye sockets on the sides and fixed some symmetry problems. I think it is about ready to mold after I smooth and do a thorough check. I like to do the major refining after a prototype is cast.

Wow look's damn nice man very cool sculpt, that and I'm a big fan of Nihilus.Cant wait to see it finished.:)

Thanks bro. I feel like it is coming along pretty nice just using the ole hands for the sculpt. I don't have any tools at my apartment! :unsure I'm going to mold it tomorrow so I can get a prototype to refine.

That's not bad at all for a hand sclupt.Might sound strange but when I use to sculpt I found taxidermy tool's work very well.

Thanks bro. I appreciate it. I've don't even know what qualifies as a taxidermy tool. I'll definitely look into them!

Wow, I'm a huge fan of Nihilus, and that looks great. I can't wait to see it finished.

I remember someone else made a mask way back, but I can't remember who.

Thanks for the support guys! I threw on a prototype mold using 100% silicone caulk. I know that most of you will think: why would do that??! Well, the truth is that it is cheap, and I can't justify using high grade silicone on the rough cast. If you really know what you're doing, using silicone caulk can actually turn out very respectable though it will never be like using smooth-on silicone. It does produce a very nice first cast to sand and fill before cracking open the expensive silicone. If anyone wants to know how exactly to go about this, I'll post a step by step sometime.

They are about the same as sculpting tool's since you have to sculpt a mold before you can put the skin on.Still cant wait to see this finished and painted.

Done any more work on this, bud? I'd love to see a tutorial, too (unless you're going to offer casts of the mask!).

I should've had it 100% done by now :unsure, but I have been busy with work, vacation, Maul templates, Rorschach, etc. I'll definitely do a tutorial in the next couple weeks. I probably will offer cheap casts of this when it is done but nothing huge.

that looks really nice. I can't say that I really know the original that well off the top of my head, but I know one of the fan made ones I've seen up close had a bigger forehead, a crown I guess. That would be my only suggestion, but if it looks good according to your reference shots, then...well, nevermind, heh.
It does really look great though!
