WIP: Cross of Coronado

A fellow member (Ham Salad) asked about suggestions for finishing and painting his Cross of Coronado so I'm posting these progress pictures of mine.

The sculpt isn't nearly as nice as the Magnoli. Looks more like the Acme one to me. The whole cross looks quite thin and ***** in particular looks a bit on the undernourished side. The flowery details around the pearls look completely wrong as well. But it was a cheap piece and many thanks to the member that offered them. :thumbsup

I've removed the resin pearls and stones with a Dremel and added fake ones. I've added the mother of pearl inlays (guitar pickguard) and blue marble inlays (textured notebook cover) and the the missing borders between them (strips of 1mm styrene sheet).

I'll get the whole cross plated before I glue all the bits on and paint the blue areas around the stones. Also might add the nice gold chain later.

Not a bad job! Talent.... PURE.. TALENT!

I like the idea of the pickguards for the pearl and interesting idea for the blue marble. I like it. adds texture and not just a pint job.

I liked your line....
"***** in particular looks a bit on the undernourished side"

Um... It's freaking *****! have you SEEN the dude!?

And don't count yourself out. The magnoli, a-may-zing i pictures I have heard from two sorces is not so impresive in person. Although Magnoli is the definitive Indy prop guy. (disclaimer: I have personaly not seen a magnoli anything, so the words of my trusted friends could be bull****)

Finished! Unfortunately the heat of the vacuum metalizing's baking process caused a bit of warpage to the casting...

That looks great. Can you explain how the vacuum metallizing works? I have a CAD template Id like to cut out on a CNC table in steel. And Ive been wondering about a good method to shine it up?

Looks amazing dude! I actually kind of like the warping -- that kind of material doesn't usually keep its shape perfectly over hundreds of years. Awesome job!

great job kurtyboy! this is my metal prototype version :lol the cross maker is still working on it & should be ready soon; the finishing will be changed to antique gold, the center inlay behind the corpus changed to dark blue & the 4 center fresh water pearls changed to blue lace agate cabocons. the cross will also come complete with a double chained antique gold chain :lol

Yes I saw that at COW. Very nice but just a little out of my price range.
