Will Smith to revive 'Annie' for daughter

See here is the diff... Different strokes was made in a MUCH more equal rights kind of atmosphere (the 80's) than Annie (the 30's)

Black James west didn't bother me. (the movie just sucked)

A black Maverick in a new Top Gun, wouldn't bother me.

A white guy (portraying one of the 332nd pilots) in a Tuskegee airmen movie? THAT WOULD BOTHER ME!

You know what this thread needs? Some ill-considered remarks about political issues that isn't political, and some hot-button religious screeds that aren't religious. That'll make this a sweet trifecta.

Few would support changing known race of historical figures.

Nobody in Hollywood would dare change fictional black characters to white.

Is there a single instance in the last thirty years?

But white to black surely occurs.

There's a bit of a double standard there.

Sanford and Son was based on a UK comedy with white folks.
If they made a movie, no way would I want them to change the race
from what I grew up with. Course nobody will ever top Redd Foxx.

If I Dream of Jeannie were made into a movie, hell ,change all their races. eff it!
Didn't seem to matter on that one. Though having a black woman calling a white man
"master" would be a bad bad call.

Oh well, dug my grave enough here.

Hey folks,

listen to Larry.

Ken, there is nothing racist about thinking that an already established character should be recreated in a very similar style than in the original version.

Guys, I have to thank you for staying quite level headed on this one.

The quintessence is that it´s the STORY that matters more than the incarnation of the lead characters, except for when major story elements are based on a character´s background.

So, why not set Annie in the 1980ies? I am pretty sure that they will make a major change to the historical background. Hint: Rapper Jay-Z is involved with the score.

CTF, you are right with the "perspective". I´d say Ken just chose the wrong term when he wrote "white perspective". And we all know what he meant, not really "white perspective" but more of a "what if"-thing, which would not work out, because the story is strongly tied to the ethnic background.

Now, please continue the discussion ;)
Thanks,

It's just one of those things I felt would end up being taken the wrong way. I should have not been so eagerly defensive. But sometimes you have to worry about certian subjects being taken out of context. This is one that I want to make SURE I'm not taken wrong about.

You know what though...

What does it REALLY matter?

Would I even go see a remake of Annie in the theater anyway??? :angel

Probably not.

Though... I did like Jay-Z's version of it's a "hard knock life" back in the day. Oh, and the Dr. Evil version of Jay Z's version. :lol

But you have to admit the WHOLE thing that IS the character Annie in most peoples minds is the fact it was written about a Red headed freckle faced lil orphan girl that lived back in the great depression.

That is what you think of. Period.

That is ALL I remember about the character.

Isn't it for most of you?

HOW is this not just cashing in on a name?

I just think it sounds lame. And THAT is probably all I should have said on the matter. :sleep

Ken, buddy ol pal....i totally understand where you are coming from.....

I honestly dont know how they are going to do this film, but it would make sense for them to change the name of the film and make it more modern....

to be honest, when i think of little orphan annie...i think of the christmas story...."be sure to drink your ovaltine"

i doubt kids today know about little orphan annie...i doubt they know oliver twist 2

I never saw "Annie", so I don´t care for that particular version (!) of the character.

It´s very likely another re-imagining, so what?

Ken, do I really have to go back and check what your opinion is on a new Superman, a new Batman, a new Spider-Man? And will I find out that you care more for the original "Annie" than for all superheroes together? The horror, the horror !!! ;)

Yeah, screw Lloyd Bridges for giving us the entertainment Beau and Jeff have provided over the years. Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher should fry for making us see anyone but Cindy Williams in that Slave Leia costume.

What's with all the belly-aching? Sure, the kids get their foot in the door but they rise or fall on their own talent. Ask Chad McQueen.

Ah yes, but as I carefully said in that post, I did say, "I miss when people got into films because they had great talent and not ONLY because Daddy and Mommy are big stars."

When I see Jayden on screen at all, I see a kid who thinks he's hot s*** and that's it. You see how he is on interviews. I just don't like is wise-ass weasel little attitude he gives like the world owes him the respect.

Sorry, just makes me sick and teaches kids the wrong way to conduct themselves around adults when/if they look up to him as a child role model example.

Sounds a lot like Charlie Sheen.

Mind you, he worked with Oliver Stone, so he earned respect.

Then, lost it again.

...and again.

Heh.

I honestly think it's yet another unnecessary remake. It's that simple. It's just more crap rolling out of Hollywood that should just be flushed down the toilet of bad ideas.

I don't know what's worse, the fact that Will Smith is remaking "Annie" to allow his daughter to act (which she appeared briefly in "I Am Legend"), or the fact that we're going to do it again for a third time (I say this because I remember the Will Smith/Jada Pinkette Smith rending of "All My Love", and one bit where Jada says she kisses three kids that look like Will).
