Why is there a Vader ROTS lightsaber?

This has probably been discused a few times but why is there a Vader ROTS lightsaber, it wasn't in the movie. I saw Vader holding it in a few advertisements in stores but that's about it. I was hoping to see him building one for at least a couple seconds in the movie and have it be or be close to the ANH lightsaber but nope and the ROTS saber is really ugly, think they could have come up with something much better. Thanks.

Apparently GL approve dit himself during the making of the movie. Sidiouse made it for him and he didnt like ti so he built his own.

Personally I love this saber, its my favorite. ITs alot nicer in person, the pics dont so it justice.

I have to agree with you I think it is one ugly saber. Too many details that don't go together. It's like wearing a flannel shirt with polka dot pants.

I agree completely SaberFreak!

They based this off the hideous Barbican saber....just because GL didn't give a toss about OT detail continuity....same reason the Anakin/Luke saber is so wildly different from the OT saber.....or maybe he did care, but just saw a chance for more moolah by making the sabers inexplicably different......

like you say....it's all about the $$$$ After all.....Master Replicas would have had trouble selling us yet another Vader ANH or ESB saber with a ROTS plaque, wouldn't they?

....George aint a billionaire for nothing.....

Vader ROTS Saber....Worst Saber Ever.....

Daftest saber ever as it doesn't appear on screen at all, not even a flash of it IIRC.

This saber is a bit like a broken pencil...pointless.

Vader's saber did not bother me nearly as much as Anakin's saber. Why did it look so different from Episode 4? I would have thought Ben took the saber, threw it in a box for the next 20 years and that was that. Instead the entire saber is different when shown in Episode 4. That saber should have been EXACTLY the same from Episode 3 to Episode 4. Vader's saber could have been upgraded in the 20 years but Anakin's?

Money, Money and more Money is the only reason the sabers were made. It would have been nice for Episode 3 to have used a Graflex, metal tape and all covering the name!

I agree- they could even just have used one of the MR replicas.

I see the Barbican saber and the Vader ROTJ saber as kludges (hastily put together) replicas of the MPP-based lightsabers.
That would make the Vader ROTS saber a kludge of a kludge... a double-kludge! :wacko

I don't think GL was much involved in the making of the saber. You see him in the webdoc approving them "So this one is Darth Vader's?".

The Vader ROTS saber was constructed as a "just in case" measure. During pre-production, since the script was in flux, there was no way to know for sure if the suited Vader would use his saber in the movie, so the prop team designed and built a prop in the event that one was needed.

The same happened with the Episode 1/2-style Obi-Wan saber (with the three-holed emitter). They weren't sure if Obi-Wan would start out in the movie with that style, or with the ANH-style saber, so they made both. As it turned out, the ANH-style was used for the entire film.

Still, the ROTS prop turned out to be useful for publicity photos and as reference for toys, comics books, prop replicas, etc.

Judging by behind-the-scenes photos, the ROTS saber does not appear to be hanging on Vader's belt during the Star Destroyer scene.

As you say, it was ALL about the money. How pissed do you think GL is that people have been making their own exact replicas of the OT lightsabers for years without him making a dime on it because they were all constructed out of real parts that folks could find on their own? When the PT came around, the only concern was to make sabers that resembled the OT pieces, but could not be easliy cobbled together by fans on their own with parts found on ebay. He can't sue people for selling Graflexes, or repro Graflexes. But he can stop you from selling homespun copies of the horrid prequel sabers because he owns those designs.

The blatant greed is what stopped me cold from collecting SW stuff anymore. Apart from scoring vintage one-sheets and such on ebay, I haven't spent a penny on an LFL licensed product in about eight or nine years...dvds aside.

Well I would have to say that this question about ROTS vader saber is as good as my "Why does the Flinstones have a christmas episode?" question.

Although your question is "why" it exists most folks seem to be commenting on the saber's design and looks so I will as well.
I think it was fine. I don't think it should look exacly like it does by the time it is in Ep 4. I like the idea that sabers get used, and parts are replaced over time.
I think it works well. :)

I guess to honestly answer your question...
"Why is there a Vader ROTS lightsaber?"

My answer would have to be.....
There isn't one in 'MY' collection!
Ba-Hahahahaa :lol :lol :lol

Money had nothing to do with the new lightsaber designs.
I really find it ridiculous and cynical to claim that's even the case.

The original trilogy sabers were made from junk. Now they have all the tools to create anything they want from scratch. Why would they not remake the old ones in an idealized form? The Anakin was copied from the Luke ESB/"Ranch" lightsaber and the Vader was copied from the Barbican (the best surviving original props of each design owned by Lucasfilm). The diameter is thinner like the other prequel sabers for easier handling.
Simple reasons really.
They did the same thing for the Vader helmet - copy a real one, but "perfecting" it with today's modern tools.
