Why I had my Sidkit Blaster Thread Pulled

I pulled the plug on my thread because it was about BUILDING the kit.

I specifically asked people to keep it on topic and not to post hypothetical questions but that didn't seem to work.

There is a serious problem on the RPF, people are either very lazy or don't have the time to read an entire thread before posting.

I wanted a person to be able to open my thread and find it full of useful information

- Not hypothetical discussions about the parts of the kit.

- Or discussions about the type of finish that would be on a Service Gun issued to a Sgt of the Independent Army

- And as much as I loved seeing pictures of Dr McCoy's assembled Blasters they really didn't need to be in a thread about building one.

I'm sure if I hadn't pulled the thread we would have had 3 pages of "That looks great" posts and questions about the differences between the 3 versions which would have led to discussions about the ethics involved in making the kits, etc.

A stand alone "Comparison Thread" would have been a lot more beneficial to the forum.

I also really wasn't that fond of the "Where can I find a Brass Brush for my Dremel" posts. I think there was 5-8 posts to find a simple item that is sold at Lowes, Home Depot and about 100 web based retailers.

Now, even though I may seem like I got mad and took my toys home, I didn't.

Once my kit is finished I plan to post all of my information in a new thread in a single post.

This is both good and bad news.

Yes, I will post the info but now you might want to hold off on building your kit until I do, or else you might suffer the "Oh crap I wish I had waited syndrome"

The best thing to do in a case like this is host it on your own server like Matt Munson's R2D2 blog then link to it from the RPF.

That way you are in total control of what is posted.

Let me clarify...

David, you've been on here for damn near two years more than I have and it has been this way since I have been on the RPF. If you create a thread, you run the risk of it going beyond your control. Sometimes, though, that can be a very good thing.

And no... you will never change the way the rpf naturally operates by closing every thread you create the very second it strays from what you wanted.

This isn't ASAP... and thankfully so.

It would seem you're part of the crew that's "either very lazy or don't have the time to read an entire thread before posting"

I specifically said that I would post a full tutorial once I finished my kit.

So excuse me if I don't feel like wasting my time posting useful information in the middle of 4 pages of useless information in a thread I created.

At the rate that thread was growing from off topic posts it would have hit 30 pages by the weekend.

But to be perfectly honest I'm starting to reconsider my offer.

Why should I spend my free time taking pictures and creating tutorials for a forum that rarely expresses gratitude or thanks.

I must have spent at least a hour on each step and I don't have a lot of hours to spare

In fact, just because of what you said I have decided that I WILL NOT BE POSTING ANY MORE INFORMATION OR TIPS ON HOW TO BUILD THIS KIT

If you have a kit and were looking forward to my tutorial, be sure to blame "JOE" for what has happened.

If I'm going to get blamed for "taking my toys home" I might as well do it.

Another nail in the coffin

There goes my run of Machined Steal Thumbscrews I was going to offer for around $3 a peice.

You can all blame "LZeitgeist" for that one.

Darn you Joe! Darn you to heck!

Darn you Pat! Darn you to heck as well!

Still as there seems to be another thread with tips on building the Mal pistol I guess this thread is redundant and probably off topic already.

Did anyone else catch that Dodgers game that happened in my imagination?

With all due respect...

I totally understand that you would get annoyed about the thread going off-topic. I would even understand you deciding to no longer post your tips as a result of people disobeying your rules.

But removing the tips that were already up? That just seems over-the-top.

Also, in my opinion, the Dremel brush posts and (at least to a point) the service gun finish posts were on-topic, as they concerned methods of building/finishing the kit.

Discussions about how the available finishes look once applied to this kit compared to the real prop would have been appropriate but hypothetical discussions about the type of finish a real service gun would have were just plain sill in an assembly thread.

Birdie: There is this new thing on the internet called Google located at Google.com

Type the following words into the search bar and you will get 38 pages of web based retailers that sell Demel tools and I'm sure half of them have brass brushes available "DREMEL TOOLS"

Not in the UK though - he'd need to use www.google.co.uk or alternatively he could ask in a thread like this.

Glad they're "steal" thumbscrews and not steel thumbscrews or I would be upset! :lol

Seriously, this whole sour grapes post isn't going to do anyone any good and has the potential to just turn into another giant pissing contest.

Let it go...

Oh wow! It seems I already have one!

I always wondered what kind of tiny chimney that attachment was designed to clean!

Thanks for that top tip, Dave, now I know what all those funny little doodads are meant for. Imagine my surpise to find those funy little disks that I've been buffing my teeth with are for cutting metal!

Lukily we both saw the funny side.

But....isn't this what a discussion forum is about?

That's the nature of the beast: it's dynamic. Topics can ebb and flow, which provides assistance to a broad spectrum of individuals with a broad spectrum of concerns.

If it was static, it'd be a website. Perhaps you should make a website. That is, unless everyone's been too naughty.

Besides, I've been using those discs to cut steaks.

I thought the original thread was really great. Every thread derails eventually, or just dies.

Boba Debt, perhaps you should have asked the moderators to edit the thread instead of pulling it. You're attitude about it is really offputting, to be frank. Withholding information, and cancelling a run of items because of a handful of posts (or just 1 post) is childish, and sort of rubbing the boards nose in it to boot? Why? That's way beyond baiting.

But you're taking it to a new level by thinking it's going to hurt other people's builds, almost as if you WANT to hurt other members builds because you don't like what some people posted. That's petty, and it's very odd. Then you try and point out other peoples bad behaivor? What's worse?

Personally, I can't wait to get my metal kit, and I hope you lighten up, and ease off on the control issues. Try and enjoy yourself a little instead of getting wound up and pissed off about what other people post.

And as for posting vital information on page 4, so what? Why do you care if people miss it? You don't like people who don't read a whole thread anyway, so screw 'em. Not everyone will miss your posts, and those who see it will appreciate it. Like me. I thought you're thread was cool, and I never found the discussion worthless.

Just my 2cents. :)

It's a good thing I have a huge bladder, must be why I win most of the pissing contests I get into.
