yup, that was before he inadvertantly killed Vic Morrow and 2 child actors. :angry

I literally bumped into him at Comic-con two years ago.

I was at the Gentile Giant booth looking at some Wizard of Oz stuff. When I started to back peddle away I bumped into a guy walking with a cane.

It was John Landis. I said "Oh wow, John Landis." He said, "Shhhh, don't tell anyone."

I thanked him for the Blues Brothers and Animal House and went on my way.

I guess he can walk the floor at the show and doesn't get recognized. It has been some time since he's done anything of note.

Spielberg and Landis traded cameos in the movies they were making at the same time. Landis appears in 1941 as the dirt covered messenger on a motorcycle and Spielberg, of course, is the Cook County Assessor's office clerk at the end of the Blues Brothers.

They also, along with Jerry Goldsmith, did some cameos on "Gremlins"

i couldnt believe my eyes when i saw him RoboCop

im sat here after my surgery and thought il watch RoboCop and then he appeared i had to rewind several times :wacko

He's a genius. It totally sucks what happened on the set of Twilight Zone, but if you read more into how the studio backed him into shooting inside a hanger with a helicopter, you understand it was less his fault and more Donald Swisher (who was running things at the time). Look at how many stunts were in Blues Brothers and not a scratch was left on a person - it was because John was in charge of that movie (the studio never believed in it).
But, anyhow, American Werewolf in London, Blues Brothers, Kentucky Fried Movie, Michael Jackson's Thriller -- the dude was and is an incredible talent who should still be doing comedies.

I spent some time on the set of the second Blues Brothers movie.

At one point a cadre of studio execs was invited to watch a particularly complex car stunt from a "safe" vantage point behind the lead camera.

Needless to say the stunt went badly awry, and an out-of-control car was sent PLOWING into the camera as the terrified execs fled for their lives.

It was beautiful.

That sounds awesome! -I'd have loved to have seen that

Wait a minute the helecopter scene was shot inside a hanger? :wacko

I thought I read it was filmed outside at night (easily breaking the curfew of child actor laws).

From what i remember and from the footage -- it was shot indoors with the copter suspended, but running. They wouldn't allow Landis two extra days in the jungle location because another movie was scheduled to begin production and just figured they could do the "rescue" scene on a sound stage. I could be confusing this, but I know the end result was Landis argued the scene was unsafe and motioned to change locations or simply delete the scene and come up with a new one - his requests were denied and the scene proceeded with tragic results. News of the accidents weren't released for a full 4 hours after - and Landis was blamed for everything. His name had even been forged on request sheets asking for more shooting time with the two children. He got through court but was railroaded by the studios who labeled him a "RISK".

Wow. Well, if everything on this site is correct then NOTHING I read about the accident stands up. I don't know. I never had any person contact with Landis, the closest I came to that was meeting David Allen Grier when I cast him in Instant Karma. He did tell me that Landis suffered from EXTREME stress and was hospitalized on the set of Amazon Women on the Moon, because of heart problems - the trial for Twilight Zone was going on at the same time.

The footage of the accident linked from that site is a different angle than the one I saw - the Helicopter didn't appear to be that low, but what do I know - i wasn't there. I could have SWORN it was filmed inside though.
