Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

I thought the magazine was removable already, as long as you don't glue it in? I think I might try and fit some sort of magnet in there to hold the magazine in.

Yeah, it is removeable, but the online instructions say to epoxy it in.

Magnet! Sweet!

OK, hopefully he's not getting deluged in PMs from us, but I've just takent he liberty of PMing Phillippes about the grips. Let's keep our fingers crossed and see what he's got to say.

it might not be too hard to hand make some grips if you have any woodworking skills..
the magazine nearly HAS to be removable... i might even take a 38 special round, deativated to permanently mount in it

Shiny! Fingers crossed.

Also, another thing about the magazine; did the "hero" Mal pistol have those gaps in the top of the magazine, or did Sid cut out sections to make it easier to epoxy in? I just don't remember them being there, for some reason. If they're not, I guess that's another mod we have to see about implementing.

Wow! That was fast! I just got Phillippes reply. He says to get bent. Though in his defense, he was much more polite about it than I'm making it out to be. It's mostly because I'm bitter and now have to track down a set of wooden grips on my own.

might be able to soilder on some brass "feeding lips" like a real magazine...

Oh yeh another thing i noticed about their build is that they did the WHOLE gun with the browning stuff.... shouldnt the trigger guard and grip frame be a SILVER color?

I think im gonna try to do it more accurate by useing the browing solution on the barrel and body, and use a blueing solution on the grip frame and trigger guard. and then try to get the case hardened color on the trigger like a real Taurus/Smith and Wesson has.... itll make it look more realisitc me thinks

I don't like the idea of using epoxy...I wonder if there would be some way to hold it together with just screws, so I could take it apart if need be, like if I needed to fix the trigger mechanism or some such.

There was once a thread on here that showed how to get a fairly realistic wood-grain appearance on a resin cast...if someone knows where that is, maybe it'd be a reasonable fascimile until we can scrounge up some real walnut grips?

Also, I'm still a little confused about what Sidkit did to finish their example gun. It's supposed to be a "bluing" solution, but the final photos appear to be brownish. Is it just a trick of the light and it's actually blue? Will the Blue Wonder be okay for getting a brown finish, or do I need to find that plum brown stuff?

..Man, this whole thing is reminding me just how new I am at this. My first big prop, and I don't even know how to put it together!

Doesn't look good for another run of wood grips by phil. This is the reply i got:
"Unfortunately, the wood grips are no longer available. There aren't
any plans to make others. "

:cry:cry

Gorram it.

Alright, anyone want to start a run of these? :love

well the thing is, i think i could make a set fairly easily, but they would be made by hand..... lots of sanding and filing, but grips arent hard to make.....
but handmade ones woulc cost more than cnc machined ones

The downside is that hard resin grips will not take much handling before the paint comes off, especially since a full metal gun will weigh a lot. I'd recommend getting a "proper" 2-part clear auto paint to seal them with if you plan on fiddling with it.

Has anyone duplicated Matsuo's technique for duplicating the look of wood w/ resin? Those BSG blasters had amazing grips - surely something like that would work well on this kit?

why go thru sooo much trouble painting something when its just as easier, and maybe cheaper to get a dremel tool and some walnut and just make the real grips...

i plan to cut um out on a scroll saw and finish with belt sanders and then files and sandpaper

I think this is the best way... Easy and so good-looking;)
Now, if only I could afford this kit...:lol
