Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

Yep...seems you need a blowtorch for all the "browning" methods. Good thing I ordered a bluing kit too :rolleyes

Though it seems the heating portion is only needed for the final step. I would imagine you could pull this off if you carefully used a good torch lighter...

Actually, I watched a demonstration video on the Blue Wonder site that showed how to use the product, and you needed a torch at one point for that one too...however, the guy said "If you don't have a torch, just use a hair-dryer".

So maybe it doesn't have to be quite as hot as they say? Could that apply to the "browning" as well as Blue Wonder?

WOW, thanks. This all seems a bit complex for my small brain and meger talents -- I will either cough up the $100+ for the bluing product SIDKIT site suggests OR just paint the damn thing with acrylic paint...its just that I hate to paint a metal model -- it tends to take away the metallic finish of the natural metal.

The link I posted earlier in response to the blowtorch reply says the metal only has to get to 120 degrees or so, just so that it is not comfortable to touch. I doubt the Sidkit gun will melt at 120 degrees, so the hair dryer would probably work just as well.

Nope, brass.

Brass and bronze are almost the same, one just has more copper.

I was just reading thru the 'Official Companion' book the other day researching my paint job, and it said something about the add on parts for the gun being investment cast in bronze. :confused

Well the brass bronze thing comes down to semantics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass Note the part that says "some types of brasses are called bronzes"

The real issue is colour, brass is the right colour of the metal whether people call the metal bronze or not, but bronze plating or paint or what have you will be the wrong colour.

The brass guns that were offered were made of the same materials in the same way as the real ones, and they were brass.

It's on Amazon for $22, unless I'm looking at the wrong version of the product...you have to search for "Blue Wonder" as two separate words, though.

Yeah, that's the difference. They are also of two distinct colors, one being more copper in color and the other more golden.

The method I described above almost completely preserves the metallic finish (which is why I use it).

Seconded. Can never get enough pictures of the Mal pistol. I'd also be interested with any mods for it that people are planning.

I don't think anyone's gotten theirs yet, but there are at least a few who've ordered one. I've got one on the way (Over the weekend, I got an email that it would be shipping within 3 days).

From looking at it, it doesn't seem like a lot of mods are necessary. But then again, I'm just a rank prop amateur so what do I know. The only thing I want to swap out is that I desperately want to get a set of Phillipes real wood grips, if I can track some down or if he decides to make another run for us stragglers.

Definately! I wouldn't be able to bare with my Mal pistol to have plastic grips.

I thought the magazine was removable already, as long as you don't glue it in? I think I might try and fit some sort of magnet in there to hold the magazine in.

I was thinking the same thing. That here we are, wondering aloud if Phillippes would do another run or if he had any left over when the simpler solution would be to just ask the man.
