Where to start with the Jack Sparrow...?

This is not going to be a quickly-completed project; I'm going to ease into this one. I'm just trying to think of where to start.

What pieces are hardest to come by? What pieces are currently available, but may disappear in short order? What pieces will likely always be available, so there's no rush to get them now?

In other words, what things should I get while the gettin's good?

Your thoughts and opinions are welcome.

Regards,

Well, I guess it depends which Jack you're going to do...

POTC
DMT&AWE
or OST

All have different this or that. It's like being Boba Fett, first you have to decide which Fett you're going to be.

Second, are you going for screen accuracy? Are you prepared to buy a $350 belt or hat? Or are you willing to let some costs slide?

Poke around the wiki (link below) and look at the parts list, to get a feeling of how big the scope is. Almost everything is still "available" out there for the right price. And who knows what new items will become available once the movie comes out.

Heh. Actually, I've been scouring that Wiki for several weeks now. Great stuff.

I'm thinking a DMC/AWE version, but I dunno. I guess that was the whole point of my post. What can/should I buy now that would apply to all three variants?

Rings, particularly the skull ring, seem like the obvious choice. Which is why I ordered them today. ;)

I won't say "price is no object," but I'm definitely not looking to do this on the cheap. But since I can skip the tricorn and the frock coat, I can eliminate two very expensive pieces.

Here's an example:

The MR Sparrow sword is on Amazon for $215. They claim there are only three left in stock. Now, do I order one at $215, since I know they won't be getting any more (from MR at least)? Or are the $165 alternatives listed on the Wiki just as good? If so, then I can wait on the sword, save myself $50 and focus on something else that might or will be in short supply.

well, also ask yourself how much you need a metal sword? The MR looks amazing, and it's heavy - but it certainly is a decorative piece. It's not "full tang" so you arn't buying a sword I would swing at trees or zombies.

I have seen the MR sword go on ebay for cheaper, but not often.

As with any project, start with a drink. Rum seems appropriate in this case. Plenty of cheap ones available also.

Hmm. Amazon claims it is full tang.

The Hanwei Revolutionary war hangar is $117, and looks VERY nice to me.
SH2375 - Hanwei Revolutionary War Hanger - $117.95
... If I wasn't budgeting right now I would buy it on the spot

I wonder if it's full tang. The site says "battle-ready", but I suppose that could mean anything.

My main hesitation to starting with the sword is that you can't take that piece everywhere. I doubt the theater would let you take it to the premier, ect. I would go with the fabric pieces that need the most aging. Frock is optional, pants aren't too hard to weather. I would say the shirt and vest followed by the sash/belts.

Wig would actually be best place to start but it is a beast, not what I would consider easing into it.

Hanwei is an excellent company, created as a partner of CASIberia. They sell a multitude of low-level to high-end weaponry which is targeted to rein-actors, martial artists, and stage combatants. If it says battle ready I do believe it would have a full tang...

*edit* Further reading of a review on MyArmory reveals that this particular sword has a trough tang, and the handle is not only solid metal, but epoxied to the body.

I'd say you would be all-right.

A trough tang is forged with the blade, and would be as long as a full tang, however it is quite thin. (Similar in shape to a rat-tail tang, however much stronger and safer)

Rat tail tangs, are generally used in knock-off stainless wall hangers. More accurately referred to as a weld-tang, it is usually stock, braided steel bar that is welded to the base of the blade (poorly)... VERY dangerous, and the reason why people shouldn't use 'stainless steel wallhangers' for cutting purposes.

Like I said though, Hanwei is a reputable company and the majority of their products are solid steel. I personally recommend their products, being a customer myself.
That is to say, get whichever one you think would suit you best! :)

:lol+:thumbsup to this one!!!!

I'm more of a "make it yourself" kind of person, it's the cheapest and most fun! So can't really advice you on where to go to buy whatever.
Except for the bandana, I got some at an India clothing store.
And antique-shops for the beads.

There's still a bit of the DIY stuff floating around out there from
"the old days".....most of it DMC & AWE. Can't address what's
changed for OST, but guessing, not much.......?

Thanks for that review... pretty enlightening. (especially to see the curvature of the Hanwei blade)... It looks like it actually would be a *more* efficient cutting tool, if used for that purpose.

BTW, generally the center of balance on a sword should be no less than 2, no more than 6 inches above the guard (Depending on the overall weight/ length of the sword). 5 Inches may be a bit tip-heavy for that particular length... but that just means it wouldn't be as maneuverable (Making up for maneuverability with cutting power in the "sweet spot" about 5 inches from the tip of the blade).

Personally, being acquainted with curved blades that are stockier, that Hanwei is looking pretty nice for my personal taste.
For accuracy purposes however, the modified toy is probably the best option when considering the visual accuracy / price ratio. The Windlass Studios, I imagine being the next best option.

I agree and they are still everywhere for less than $20. You can always get a real sword later - especially since the new movie is coming out, who knows what merch will be available.

Besides, if you don't have a baldric.... a real sword is .... heavy
