Where can I get non-pirate, real metal gold coins?

Everything I've found is plated plastic with skulls and crossbones, eagles or some generic looking guys head on it.

I want real metal, preferably something gold colored, bronze, copper, or even plated metal, just so it has weight and feels cool to the touch.

Any ideas?

Go to a coin show or a coin shop and raid their foreign coin bargain bin. There are lots of goodies like 100 Rupiahs from India, the Singapore dollar etc. at between $0.25-$3.00. You won't get a lot of repeats but there will be a lot of variety just like a real pirate's stash could be.

I rather like the new US Dollar coin series. Get a bunch of William Henry Harrison dollars and say. "See he didn't die from pneumonia after giving his inauguration speech. He went back in time and became a pirate!"

The US dollar coins the mint offers with the presidents of the US are a gold color and easy to get at the bank.

If you browse Ebay on a regular basis and do searches for

"Spanish Cobs" "Spanish Coins" "Pirate Coins" "Pirate Cobs"

You can usually find replica or fake ones as well as real ones that are honestly reasonable...

I also sent you a PM to a specific auction...

EDIT ** Ooops I see you want non-pirate ones...

In that case there are tons of coins by the pound on ebay...

mmmm not to high jack this thread but what about fake/replica asian "coin" sticks or coins. I would like to find some of them myself

You and I can go and rob some banks, search for treasure, or something... :D

When I was a wee tyke, I got a replica gold coin from the museum at the fort in St. Augustine, FL. It had a good weight to it and looked realistic too. So, you could check online shops for museums, maybe.

I'd also recommend going to ye olde coin shop / stamp shop / antiques place / flea market / whatever and looking in the 'cheap' or '$1' section. Maybe ask politely.

You may be able to score some old British coins (large, brass, copper, silver, nickel) or older American coins (large, copper, silver or nickel) for relatively cheap.

"My mama told me - you better shop around." :)

Good luck.

I have gotten several types of coins from the Great American Coin Company and have been very pleased with them.

Quick service and good variety (a little pricey in my opinion, but that is just because I am a cheap b******d.

Cheers

great idea for you look for "saint augustine mint " i bought some silver reals or cobs from this guy there made from real silver and are excellent copies at super reasonable prices aprox. 18 or so dollars for a one real spanish treasure cob you surely won't be disappointed , you can order them antiqued or mint struck , check them out the guy that makes them does an excellent job and makes them the way they did in the old days hand struck and trimmed also offers a variety of other replica coins made from real gold and silver

If you aren't looking for something specific, do some searches on game currency coins. I'm pretty sure companies like Broken Token and Meeple Source have some custom cast metal coins that replace paper money in board games. You'll get various denominations for a relatively reasonable price.
