What's Up With Sideshow?

I was just looking through their sculptures/dolls on their website, and I gotta say....really disappointed in the likenesses. Some of them look nothing like the people they're supposed to, like R. Lee Ermey, Al Pacino, and Marlon Brando. I mean, R.Lee looks like a G.I. Joe doll, and the others aren't any great shakes either.

The dolls are nice, but for the scratch that they're asking, they should look a lot better I would think. Someone posted a thread on here of modifications that he made to their Anakin and Obi figures that took the figures leaps and bounds beyond where they were in terms of likeness. What gives? How come fans can do it but sideshow falls kinda short?

The sculpts are usually good, but what happens to them in China is usually what ruins them.

The Godfather statue is truly a disappointment, though. I can't believe that went up for sale looking like that.

Here's my Army of Darkness Ash I just got last week..

I've reworked quite a few sideshow pieces.... like most 1/6 figures out there they have some really great details/features, but are often let down in either the production (usually the paint) or in part of the sculpting. The realism companies are getting out of these figures lately is improving all the time though.... (just check out Hot Toys figures, especially the Rambo ones..... the likeness to Stallone is so much better on the recent figures than the earlier ones.... and I can onnly see it getting better and better over time.)

These are some of my resculpts/repaints..... I always want my figures to look like mini shrunken versions of the actor on screen.... like a museum piece if you like, and not just an action figure

and they're getting pretty damn close these days (and more expensive, lol)

*SNIP* Truncated for sanity.

I LOVE your work.

I know I was heart broken when I got my Aragorn and saw how off the likeness was to the prototype. And It actually looks better than the paint job yours(hunky_artist) originally had. Boromir and Faramir faired a LOT better though.

Quite honestly though it doesn't seem like certain figures are better done than others. It seems like the quality from figure to figure in a run can be wildly different. :confused

Here is the new Indiana Jones 12" head with some color added to it..

And the unpainted head...

Jedifyfe, just to clarify: Those Indy heads are Sideshow's, right? I'm REALLY impressed by the likeness. A good Harrison Ford likeness seems almost impossible to find. The Cinemaquettes Indy doesn't even TRY to look like Harrison Ford. This looks promissing...

Yes, this is the new sculpt for the 12" Indiana Jones by Sideshow.

Is that Ash one of the premium format figures? I had always wondered if they were painted to a higher standard than the rank and file 12" figures or if they were also hit or miss. From the pictures provided Ash looks pretty sharp.

Having just receved my Anakin resculpt yesterday I have to say publicly that Darren is insanely talented. His Anakin likeness is dead on. It is now one of my favorite piecse in my collection. Thanks Darren!!!

I know a lot of people complain about that Chinese figure saying the hair is terrible.. but I absolutely LOVE it. For me it's easily the best Anakin out there. Stunning work.

(and Maik, thanks for the compliment about mine..... means a lot!)
