What is this material and where is it commonly used? I've seen it before..

the only thing that i can think of is a steel mesh cutting glove material like restaurants and butchers use.
? :confused?

Thanks for the reply guys. I know its not burlap, like i seen it in car upholstery stuff before.. or like those oven mittens... and its not steel mesh...

I've not seen it on oven mittens, they tend to simply be quilted cotton or sometimes silicon if you are posh;). Looks like a nylon canvas too me, which is sold under many names. It's been quilted and painted silver but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Sold for outdoor pursuits: camping bags, tool bags and the like.
400 Denier Nylon Pack Cloth Fabric - from www.ahh.biz

Interesting use of the grain in the piece up there. I can't tell though if it has some adhered backing or not, some nylon canvases do such as those used for luggage.

My guesses:
aero-mesh or spacer mesh
(used in backpacks, sportswear, footwear, car upholstery)

batting or foam covered in fabric, covered and sewed with a toole or other mesh.

The material used for the underside of a mouse-pad. (which I used for a HALO neckseal)

It is nylon. This type is called "ballistic nylon" it is used in military applications and luggage. It is very strong and is resistant to abrasion and tearing. The stitching will fail before the cloth does. It runs between $5 and $10 per yard.

looks a lot like the silver/grey cloth gloves that are cut resistant. Ive got a pair and they look identical to the cloth.

Thank you for all the replies. It's not ballistic nylon. Used to work for a major luggage company in high school so I know for a fact its not.

I think its transparent. Ryu and Stealth and MDB i think got it right.. or atleast point me in the right direction.. thank you guys.

If you are wondering, I am planning to make a Raiden suit from Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

Oh and Tsuyosa, my Nintendo DS pouch has that material! I just realized it right now! LOL

Now I just need to buy sheets of this....

recommendations anyone?

thank you again guys.

oh and I would ask the source directy what material is this .... BUT.....

from where I got this picture I know he wont share... because it's from RPF's most favorite person in the whole wide wiggity world!!

oh ma gosh, I'm so excited people on here are doing metal gear costumes!! This will be great! I found this girl on cosplay awhile ago that did the best Raiden from MGS4 I had seen yet. She used to have the build on there but now you have to login, so I would check out her website that's also on there or login if you're a member. Seriously check it out it's fantastic. The cyborg parts on the face were machined and everything.
Excited to see progress and good luck to you!!! :D
