What is the significance of luke and the binary suns scene in a new hope to you

I'm really surprised by the interpretations here.

I think folks are forgetting the context of the scene. He just left dinner where Owen crushed his dreams. He isn't looking at adventures ahead, he's looking at adventures he thinks he'll never have. He's stuck. "Looks like I'm going nowhere."

It's a scene of sadness and yearning. There is no hope, comfort or excitement in it. We might know his future holds those things but the character, at this moment, does not.

Yep, absolutely.
You also have the analogy of the first son rising and then the second son rising, followed by their sunset. The mythological father son analogy was pretty strong throughout the series.

What did it mean to me at seven years of age (back when I first saw the scene in 1977)...

"Oh wow! There are TWO suns!" (I was seven after all ;) ).

What does it mean for me now?

It is the classic "call to adventure" for Luke; the potential hero. However Luke is also the "reluctant hero" because Owen is purposely holding him back. The suns setting= time is running out.

When I saw it at age 8 I took it as he wanted to leave and go into space. I don't think I was too far off. :)

Youth longing for what is beyond the horizon of their ordinary life, easy to relate to when young.
But now for me, still a reminder when older, don't lose that longing even if your not destined to blow up a death star.

To me it was very musical theatre. So often in musical theatre there is the "ballad of longing". It's where our protagonist wishes for a better future. For "tomorrow" or "somewhere that's green" or "some enchanted evening"

Summed up perfectly for me.

Hamill did a fantastic job as well. The longing in the eyes, the return to his eyes in the dirt of his present situation.

These days we spend so much time bashing GL, and talking about how his co-workers deserve more of the credit . . . it's nice to hear an occasional example of GL making the right call & getting something better out of his top people.

Some moments in that video above remind me of the Jaws soundtrack. Jaws was only 2 years back at the time.
