What is the meaning or significance to Yoda's robe falling...

When Yoda is semi-defeated by the Emporer in ROTS his robe falls off and lands on a post. The camera fixes on this, so we know it has some meaning. Seems to me I remember another film where this is done and it had a hidden meaning to it.

Ive searched the web but have been unable to find an official answer. Does anyone know the meaning behind this?

I would say it means the Jedi are done..hanging it up. Since all Jedi wore the robes as its fashion statement. Way to go Yoda, punk bitch of the galaxy.

The computer effects guys perfected replicating cloth fabric and motion and were just showing off.

But I agree with others- they stripped him of his Jedi robe- the most important thing he had. Like stripping a disgraced soldier of his rank.

i was always puzzled about that whole scene in general. exactly how does yoda lose? how does the emperor win? cause one is laughing and the other one is grief-stricken (more like in pain from a nasty fall).

Well when you run away like a punk ass bitch. It's a good sign you give up the fight to save your own hide. Plus not even try to go wreck & effect on the emperor once obi tells you he made a hot pocket out of vader. Just prove ls that you are no fighter or warrior that you claim to be. Frankly I see yoda as the one who lead the down fall of the Jedi & galaxy. Was the emperor really evil?

I agree.

I think that the Emporer sums it all up perfectly when he says to Yoda "Your arrogance blinds you"

The Jedi were smug, arrogant and blind to what was happening under their noses.

Havn't watched ROTS in years but does the Emperor know Yoda survived? I thought Palpatine thought Yoda had force vanished like Obi Wan in ANH.

Although, doesn't Palpy then ask for a search for the body?

The clone troopers tell the Emperor that no body was found, and he tells them to double their search effort.

I always figured that the Emperor would be able to search Yoda out if he wanted to. Which leads to another question:

Is there any 'official' truth to the cave on Dagobah being the evil force that cancels Yoda's light side out? I always heard that this was the reason that the Emperor was unable to find Yoda.

I can't recall off hand, but didn't yoda's body just fade out / disappear when he kicked the bucket? If so there wouldn't be a body to find.

The empire could have searched for yoda on the planets. But with clone troopers being so weak minded, yoda could have just waved his hand to convince them he wasn't there. Also, maybe they can't sense the force if you don't use it. I mean its not like highlander when you walk into a room you know it's immortal time. Vader didn't know Obi wan was on the Death Star until he started to use the force on the shields. Idk, just a guess

My input on these two questions:

1) Yeah, the robe falling signaled the end of the Jedi. The significance of it in particular is that the removal of the robe signifies the removal of any favor or acceptance of Jedi: they were now hunted and had no "covering" by the republic or any other governing body.

2) Yoda hid on Dagobah because of the abundance of life there: his method was to hide his life essence amongst so much life that it would be like trying to find a needle in a mountain of needles. Life creates the Force and makes it grow, hence it would mask his presence. Obi-Wan, on the other hand, hid on a distant desert planet (Tatooine). Since the Emperor probably thought him killed in Order 66, it wasn't so important to try to locate him.

Obi-Wan hung out on tattooine cause of Luke being there with the only family he had. Plus Obi was very good friends with both his parents. So it's like he is watching over part of them, even tho Ani was a baddie now. Can't forget you would think Luke would show signs of the force. Gonna have to guide him a bit. Can't say that the emperor would think he is dead from order 66. He did sense vader was In trouble and its not from getting in a speeder accident with a DUI. Plus he shows up and see that Vader looks like a badly burnt ginger bread cookie. Yeah Obi-Wan was here and moved on. Unless Vader said he killed him i. A crazy made up story and the body was in the lava. Idk
