I just got the Galaxy Trading shin guards. How accurate are they? They don't look too close to the real one. I thought they molded everything from the Rubies lifesize.

Hi Yodakiller,

The GT shins, from my recollection are not screen accurate.
The are long and skinny...
I have a pair of the CO re-casted ESB shins and they are WIDER than the GT and of course, as with most true SW props/costumes, not perfectly symmetrical...Hope this helps.

Re: the boxes. I agree with you in that they are a bit too rectangular. I don't think that they were a perfect box either where all sides are equal. I think that the movie boxes are rectangular, but "fatter" than the GT boxes.

For those of you in contact with them, GT has beautiful, cleaned up, and movie accurate Vader shin guards now. The best on the market by far and in both ABS and fiberglass. Truly gorgeous.

Hi darthjones. I just received a set of the fiberglass ones from GT a couple of days ago and these, by far, seem to be the most accurate shin guards available. I have a question, though, regarding the side areas. I have another set of shin guards (not nearly as clean and sharp as the GT ones) which were also "supposedly" cast from originals. They have the same general details, are a bit longer from top to bottom (which I'm virtually certain is less accurate than the GT ones), but the side areas on these are rounded at the sides of the knees (shown on one guard at blue arrow) whereas the GT ones are pointed. Since I've never seen any clear photos of the studio ones from a side angle, which is more correct - curved or pointed?

No, these aren't. But I also have a pair of CO's as well. The ones in the picture above are from another board member and are made of pretty hefty fiberglass. Not to discredit CO, but the ones I got from him a couple of years back were *extremely* thin fiberglass and just didn't cut it really. He may have changed them since that time to a more substantial fiberglass, but back then I believe his primary expertise was with Stormtrooper pieces; Vader was something he was just getting into.

Hey, guys. I don't know if a point or curve is more accurate at that point. I would guess more of a point but not razor sharp.

I know that the GTs are made from ILM 1st generation pulls and then cleaned up a little bit.

I think the movie shins may have had four straps sometimes whereas these have two but big deal, y' know?

Thanks for the insight. Either way, the visible profile is definitely accurate. If they were from ILM masters, then I guess that settles it - they were pointed!

Well, the edges on the ILM masters, on the plaster positive itself, were not super defined. I wouldn't be surprised if some were more pointed than others. I like these with the point on it because you can make the top strap come out right from that spot and go back. It looks like a nice hard transition. I know of an ILM set of shins with pointy bottoms too. Looks more harsh. Kinda nice.

If you look at the Archives book, you will see pointed bottoms on the Vader mannequin shin armor.

I know too that GT sharpened the edges on the block spikes and added a little bit of "thickness" at the top.

The bottoms on these (new GT version) are pointed as well. From the very few scenes in the trilogy which show the shin guards from (faint)side angles, there do appear to be four straps. But if one is inclined to do so these GT guards can easily be modified to that end. All told these are the best around.

I just wanted to thank everyone who has posted in this thread. The information is great, and has helped me in working on Vader kit more than any other single source I have found.

Kudo's to Dr. Jones and others who contributed!

Thanks,
Troy

I was wondering if there was any clear shots of ANH Vader helmet so i might see for myself some of the more subtle differences between to three variants... From the pic of the raw casting, it looks like the lower side pipes are much smaller than the other two.

Hey DJ,

Thanks for your valuable input over the months.

Do you know the differences between the ESB and ROTJ Vader helmets? Were they purposely changed?

Hope you can shed some light on this.

Alan.

Hey there. I'm obviously a newbie here, but the info on the vader stuff here is great. Thanks DJ. I also have a few pieces of GT stuff, but am having a hard time getting finding them to buy more pieces. I thought the chest box they sold was killer. Any idea where I can get the strap thing for the shoulder bells on GT armor? I bought mine before they switched over to that way of securing them. Oh, whoever made the casting of the vader helmet...how did you do that? I wanted to try that with making a mold of mine, and casting so I can experiment with the painting. I only have a DP CA helmet, and I don't want to screw it up, ya know?
