Hi there RPF. I have been lurking here for awhile, and you guys do some truly amazing work. I was spacing out waiting for some paint to dry and realized I never post anything here. I do projects all the time, what the hell.
Anyways, I have been working on a Power Sword (guardsman style) on and off for a couple of weeks now, and am getting pretty close to finished. I know its a little late, but the last stages involve the most work, and I want your opinions.
I started off with a 3d model from I believe DoW.
This is the first time I had actually unfolded a piece I wanted to make myself, not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. After scaling the blade and hilt to the sizes I wanted them to be, I printed out and assembled them.
After nearly finishing the blade, I made an error with some resin and it ended up making the blade ridiculously heavy and misshaped, not to be denied, I used the now useless pepped blade to make an exact copy out of wood (this was also the 2nd time ever doing anything with wood).
I sealed and filled the pepped hilt with resin, making it one solid piece, most definitely not the best way to do this, but it did work, so meh. Instead of pepping the handle I made use of the woodshop I work in and lathed a hilt for it out of Koa (Had a lot of scrap pieces of it in the shop)
I took advantage of the woodshop owners interest in my project by making him show me how to use all of his tools =P I plan to add lights to this weapon so I routered out a good portion of the blade, and made a sort of stylized guard to cover it (and for the planned light to come out of).
I also coated the wooden blade in a very thin layer of bondo and sanded it smooth, hiding the wood grain pretty effectively.
This is where I am currently at, effectively finished the hilt of the sword, just some minor cleanup and heraldry to add and it is finished. I also did a whole lot of cleanup and setup on the blade, and found a way to temporarily attach it to the hilt in prep for the electronics.
Sorry for the long post, but atleast its all caught up now. Will update with more progress pics as it progresses.
Hope you like it!
