Weta Raygun Prices Announced.

Ouch.. just looking at the prices hurts but you can't say that they didn't put the work into them. The detail is just fantastic..

Kind of a strange turn of events for the RPF. A company announces their prices, and members turn away. Weird.

The price is pretty reasonable for what you are getting. The ray-gun and the display box. Pretty neat, but it seems more fun to build one yourself.

As a few of us expressed in an old thread about these, I would be tempted, even at that price (maybe), if they weren't so bloody over-engineered. "Classic" style raguns need to be much simpler for my money.

A little more like this (but without the tubing):

Their fictional story about the professor who made them is fun and all, but if he designed them from scratch, why do they all look retrofitted? If he's modifying existing rayguns, who made THOSE?

Thing that also seems wacky is I think they're going for a Victorian/Steampunk vibe, and those are clearly thirties deco and later in base design, so that part of the "story" falls flat, too.

I like the overbuilt look, but it's something I would rather have fun building myself.

Matt, yes I know strange to see people not liking the price but it's a bit much IMHO. Sure I love WETA and if a lower price version came out I would grab one but it's just over what I would like to spend.

whew... they look cool, but at that price they need to ;)

if i had money to lob at something like this, i think i would get one custom made by howard. amazing work, and they look truly "victorian".

I was expecting around $400, and was going to get one. Now at around $700... Are you kidding... Do these actually shoot rays?... I can buy a really nice REAL gun that actually can put a man down and shoot my own leg off for that price.
I can probably see this price if they were props in a really great movie, but even then it's still way too expensive.

Yep, I'm in for a Goliathon, absolutely. The workmanship is finest-kind.

If it were half the price, I may have picked one up. Being a "collectable" I would have liked to pick up more than just one... but for that price... I'm not getting any.

I'm not saying they aren't "worth" the price, they are a very nice piece, but being an independant curiosity, not connected to a movie, comic, book, or other form of media... I don't want to start another collection.

Now if they were replicas based on ray guns of Flash Gordon, or ..........something, I think they would attract more collectors.... maybe :p

Many thanks for the kind words Chris.

I'm still unable to find out what materials are going to be used. I think I'd consider shelling out that kinda dough as long as the guns were metal. If it's resin or something...I dunno.

I agree, I have been attempting to do a Howard-ish kind of Ray Gun but just getting the parts is difficult. Still it's something I want to try even if I fail badly. Love his designs for his pistols.

not a problem complimenting great work. the blasters you did were amazing, and the cutaways were insanely detailed. you have talent, thats for sure, but i think the biggest thing you bring to a project isn't the brass rods or the crystal bits or the tiny tubes and clockwork mechanisms. its the huge amount of patience you have in making something like that.

i can learn to sculpt, i can paint fairly well, and i can sometimes manage to cast things without having them turn to goo. i cannot, however, learn to have that kind of detail worked into any project i ever attempt. it takes a rare kind of person to pull that off, and you are one of em :)

I love all of them but the Goliathon most of all. Unfortunately I don't have the "spare" cash for any of them. :(

The pictures on the WETA site are small but there were some larger images posted last year. Here they are again for those interested.
