WETA: District 9 Guns

anyone have any tips on how to remove some of the silver paint scratches?

they are a bit too....this is silver paint applied by a brush rather than a scrap or scratch.

Not wrong, the silver is just stippled on. I've not got to grips with mine yet but will try alcohol and/or thinners, that silver has to go.

Some of the "removable" panels need some fairly heavy silver chipping along their edges. Latex masking would be a good way to go if you don't mind repainting a fair bit of the main paint job too.

Wanna replace that main decal too. The more I look at it, the more it bugs me.

let us know if you find something that works

the area at the end of the gun (orange part) should be gunmetal also i noticed.

Things to try:

Ajax window cleaner (I'm not kidding... it strips acrylic paints)

Citric acid mixed with water (will take off some thinner-based paints but likely not harm acrylics)

Acetone (The pure one, not the one with oil. Be careful though because it'll eat through some plastics as well.)

Screwfix do a product called Graffiti remover - works wonders on stripping paint, its like a thick liquid, like a bleach type of consistancy.
Paint it on, leave it 5 or ten minutes, and brush it off with a toothbrush.
Think 500 ml works out at £13

I'm stripping my Ed-209 with it, working well and quickly!!!

Yeah, but the problem there is that some people will be trying (I assume) to remove just the silver drybrushing, not the entire paint scheme.

I wouldn't use anything caustic on these props unless you want to remove the base coat too.

Yeah, true, if you leave it on too long it would strip the base coat and it is a bit gloopy so getting it just on the areas you need may be difficult.

As they are coming from Weta UK WH i'd assume its RM or PF.

SAS

Hopefully it will come tomorrow, or it's Tuesday earliest. I'm kinda peeved that there's no tracking on such a high value item, I really want to be in to accept it when it arrives

/\ royal mail/parcel farce tracked, maybe tomorrow morning??? fingers crossed.

i have been busy de-valuing my collectible in the garage, really enjoyable.
matt black humbrol enamel washes and chipped detail, started at the stock end. it will take a while to do the whole gun but the results will be worth it.
trying to straighten all the wonkey black lines, putting in "panel lines" going round the bolt heads, just generally tidying it up

as for the silver paint....i have tried IPA, tamiya thinners, enamel thinnners, 2k auto thinners , cellulose thinners , panel wipe and nothing will shift this mother ****er of a paint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i tried a bit on the black stripe at the front, the black paint around it started coming off and leaving the silver alone WTF!

my only option is to paint over it. i intend to paint the whole orange bit at the front.

Zorg, me too! Spent a happy couple of hours at it so far.

I tried thinners, turps and methylated spirit. No joy. I thought Franz was off with the foil idea but now I'm not so sure.

I did find something that removes it fairly effectively though. Would you like to know what it is? :p

...oh all right. You probably won't like it anyway. It's wet and dry paper. :p

The good bit is that using abrasives on random raised edges also removes some of the OEM wash and I think this actually makes the white look a good deal better.

I've sprayed up some extra orange and white on mine today but only on one side so far. Will need to re-do the orange as the shade is a little off. Also need to do the black wear marks and silver paint chipping next.

Yours is looking really good!

Too bad I did not have the cash for the Arc Generator.

But I did pre-order the Assault Rifle... makes a nice christmas present :)
