WETA: District 9 Guns

I'd love to see a range of affordable, half-scale guns - kind of like the MR .45 scale weapons.

Weta has done small versions of every Raygun that they've produced for those unwiling or unable to pay the ticket on a full-sized piece. They are also L.E. pieces. If Weta were convinced that there is an appetite for these... it might very well happen in the D9 franchise also.

Check out this earlier RPF thread from about seven weeks ago:

See my post #63.

Weta is comprised of artists and fans just like us. Convince them that there is a good reason to do something and they might very well shock you by going out and doing it. Now, as regards to this piece:

If Weta made a deluxe non static version of this prop but they only made fifty of them and they cost $2,500.00 would you stand back and applaud the ambition to create such a work of art, or would you harrangue them for creating a desirable piece that was beyond your budget? What if they only made 10 of them but they were 5,000.00? Glow, sound FX, the works.

But 5K?

Weta loves our genre, but would Micheangelo have painted the Sistine if he was just going to get bad mouthed for his efforts?

I hope you don't think I was implying that I was disgruntled at Weta for making a piece that's out of my price range.

Even if money weren't an object, display space is - hence the reason I would like to see the half-scale stuff. A lower price is an added benefit to the smaller footprint. Weta could make one for $25,000 or 1000 for $50, I still wouldn't have the space for for a full size piece.

But a line of half-scale, fully static D9 guns for $100 each - I'd probably pick up the full line.

I can attest to the fact, these WETA guys are indeed collectors, too!

I've sent more than a few props to their guys in NZ...

Welcome aboard!

No, no! Sorry. Those questions were more geared to the general RPF membership than at you personally. I see a lot of disgruntlement towards the Doctor Grordbort's line based on price. A lot of RPFers don't even understand that the default pricing on Weta's page is in NZ$. It makes a huge difference in price when you convert to U.S. $.

I pre-ordered the D9 Arc gun but I am unlikely to order any subsequent D9 guns for two reasons. One of them is the reason you cite, available display space and the piece's footprint.

The second reason is that the D9 weapons won't mesh well with the Steampunkish theme of the Rayguns pieces and those are my one true love as far as collectibles go. :love

I think it's more likely the would go 1/4 scale like they did with the mini-rayguns.

That's a problem with humans in general. We tend to read the first para of an official letter, the first sentence of a web page, the first nothing at all of a software license agreement; then press on thinking we're fully informed. I deal with the results of that at work; every week without fail someone crops up wanting out of a contract that they can't legitimately get out of.

For the benefit of anyone still on the fence about the gas projector, it works out to about $500-ish US. :p

Another topic - is anyone planning to customise the paint scheme on their gun? I mean, going for one of the alternate colour schemes, rather than extra weathering etc.

I'm very tempted to change my arc generator to the Griefboy colour scheme. :D

I had that thought as well, but the idea of modifying one of Weta's builds just didn't sit with me well enough in the end. Maybe if I make my own, I'll go for the black-and-orange look

They are being made in China not at Weta. Go for it.

Cheers. :)

I'd like to put in the moving panels, rotating gizmo and LEDs as well, but my electronics abilities are more or less nil. These parts are probably going to be moulded in anyway so messing with them will potentially mess with the structural integrity of the gun.

I'd like to fit a Blaster Core in it just like I did with my E-11, but I guess it's too risky... I'll figure it out when it arrives :)

Yea, I would love to see what some people do electronics wise, but you've gotta be pretty confident in your skills to go tearing into one of these. :lol

'Fiberglass' would make me think they would be hollow-
Ease of building them, however, would mean I'm expecting the body to be a solid cast .....
Id be surprised if they could be customised with FX without some very serious Mods!

Holy moly that LED is bright!

SAS

Yeah, they weren't messing around!

times like this I wish I had a steady job to afford the Arc.

But Im very pleased that Weta decided to produce these guns for the public to buy. Looking foward what other D9 items Weta will sell in the furture
