Wet & Wild Custom Blaster Contest

uh oh! The grade curve is now pointed straight-Up! This guy is G O O D !
Hi Pete! I just sent my eyes out for a re-lensing in enthusiastic anticipation of Seeing your entry.

Aww shucks...:$ ! Thanks for the ego boost Modeleers, right back at ya! But there are PLENTY of talented people on show here, it'll be pretty exciting seeing what people come up with!

I do have a question for Shylaah (or Jodo?) I just want to clarify this point

but one that is not a look-alike of an existing sci-fi prop design. The finished blaster must be a custom design. It must not be a replica of any other known weapon from anywhere--movies, TV, cartoons, games, literature descriptions or illustrations or from any other known media or medium.

Does this just refer to specific existing props (e.g. Han ANH Blaster), or entire existing design styles (e.g. Star Wars universe)?

Sorry, just want to make sure I don't make something that doesn't meet the requirements!

Cheers!

Ok I am going to give this a try! I am in. I found a water gun on close out for $1.74.
Hay this is my first post outside of the intro thread.

It can be hard to completely dismiss the images we know and love and the design styles we are most familiar with, but it is my hope there will be some really original custom work done here, pulled from the imagination rather than from something that already exists --something outside the replicating box.

As for the rule, it means not a replica of any specific existing prop/weapon.

As for the spirit of the contest, make it your style, not someone else's.

Sounds good to me, thanks!

I have a question about the rules. I want to use some Magic-Sculpt that I have on hand to form some of the detail on my entry. I reread the rules and cant decide if that is allowed or not.
Thanks!
Mel W.

Rule: "Your submission must be modified with found parts. "

A sculpted part wouldn't be a found part, so, not allowed.

That's actually the most frustrating thing I've found about this contest so far. I've got piles of styrene and filler putty sitting around but I have to buy more just for this project even if all I need is tiny bit to fill a gap :unsure

EDIT: So wait, re-reading the response it looks like we wouldn't be allowed to buy a tub of magic sculpt and modify a water gun with it? This is strictly a "glue bits onto a gun" contest?

I think the idea is that magic sculpt used for filling holes or combining parts would be fine, but when it comes to actually custom sculpting an entire part that's considered against the rules? So for example if you wanted to sculpt a custom clip for your gun that would be against the rules, but if you use your supply money to buy a project box from Radio Shack to use as a clip but needed to use magic sculpt or epoxy to attach it to the gun that would be ok?

The idea being that you can't sculpt a kit for your gun and attach it and call it a day.

DISCLAIMER: I DIDN'T MAKE THE RULES THIS IS JUST CONJECTURE

Thanks Wicked. You conjecture correctly! If you're using the Magic Sculpt just as a putty to fill holes or gaps, that would be fine. It counts then same as paint, glue, & solder. But there is to be no sculpting of parts to stick on the blasters.

I hope I haven't stifled the creative flow too much with too many 'in-all-fairness' rules. This is basically just a "Dollar Store" contest without the limits of buying only at the Dollar Store. It's still what Jason described as a "MacGyver Build", working with parts that may not be ideal, but that are available to everyone.

This is the Replica Prop Forum, and we all know what fantastic and stellar items members here can and do create and re-create. This contest isn't to showcase the most fantastic prop that will ever likely be built. Though I do hope it stretches your imagination and challenges you to forge some new ideas---the MOST important thing is just to have some FUN and share some camaraderie with your fellow RPFers.

So in the rules glue to stick things together is not part of the budget. What about screws? Do I have to buy screws or can I use what I have?

You can use the screws you have on hand if they are just to hold things together and are not part of the design elements.

Not stifled just pointed in a different direction.
No problem time to look around at some stores.

:lol :p ;)

Anyway...I agree with the above. If people were able to sculpt their own custom peices for their blasters, it unwinds the key idea of having a "parts" contest, don't you think? One persons skill in sculpting is deffintly not the same as another's. To me it's fair to not accept custom sculpted additions. :thumbsup Because I know I could never handle doing that. :lol:p;)

OK, another quick question. Where do we stand on "FREE" items? Such as I did my shopping at Home Depot, can I grab a complimentary Paint Stirrer? I'm pretty sure no matter where you live you can walk into a paint/hardware store and ask for one? :confused

I'm gonna say okay to the free paint stirrers --specifically-- since they are available pretty much everywhere, but this is NOT an ok for all freebies everywhere. Just the paint stirrers, no other free stuff to be used.

This looks like such a fun contest - sadly I'm unable to contribute to this one, but hopefully another contest with a similar idea will present itself again. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with!
