As someone who works in web design i'm having second thoughts even now about typing this message because I know the work involved and it feels like a slap in the face to the staff here, but personally, i'm pretty dissapointed. All of the charm and character the site had is gone, and it now looks like every other stock XenForo board on the planet. From a design standpoint it's like unflavored oatmeal, plain, consistent, and entirely unremarkable.

From a technical standpoint, yeah, it's great. I'm sure it'll be easy to use on mobile and it seems pretty fast. I never had issues with the old site on desktop so I can't really compare, but it's true that XenForo scales better across multiple devices, i'm not ignorant of the many improvements. The content is still the same, the people are still the same, and ultimately that's what should matter the most, but the old forum was a joy for me to open up and browse through and now the stark white drabness has me doing a double-take to remember what forum i'm on because I belong to six others that all look completely identical.

I'm not much of a contributer, I know that, I mostly come here to read about what other people are working on so I doubt what I have to say will mean much. In the 10 years i've been here the site has changed several times so this isn't my first rodeo, and it's not that i'm unwilling to get used to the new layout, I just think that it looks... bad.

Nothing at all wrong with holding this POV (and I greatly appreciate you sharing it in an even-handed way). You are largely right. This design IS very vanilla, which on the face of it, might feel counter-intiutive, considering this is a site largely for artists and creatives, but I have always looked at the RPF as a container for greatness, not greatness itself. It is simply a vehicle for creative people to share their amazing work... and i could keep going down that road for a while, but the other side of that coin is the one you have pointed out very thoroughly; we want the site to be exceedingly nimble, easily upgradable (there is already an even newer version of XF that is even faster and MORE mobile friendly) and we don't want to wait another 10 years before moving to it. This was a VERY VERY complicated and difficult transition and the members have had to suffer through YEARS of a barely functioning site because we customized the last one too much. We don't want to make that mistake again. Those are the real reasons behind the stripped-down approach. With that being said, I am always open to suggestion.

I think actually I had my birth year set as 1914.......

But now it’s set as 1964 instead of 1974. I can go in and change it, curious how it got changed from 1914 to 1964 (hopefully no one looked at pics of me and thought I was 54 years old and changed it.....)

I couldn’t figure out how to change the year, so I just hid the year for now and I’ll circle around later to get it correct.

Ok you're reading a forum. How do you mark that single forum as being read? I can only find a link that says "Mark forumS read".

Thanks for reading and replying. I don't disagree with anything you've said, and it's true that the content on the site should be more important than the site itself, which is to say that usability should be prioritized over looks.

As far as suggestions go, I do have some and i'll try to stay objective about it, but ultimately this is just my own preference. I'd like to see a fixed-width layout like the old site brought back as an option for desktop users because it can be more comfortable to browse on certain resolutions and some people simply prefer it. As far as I know, XenForo has a built-in style selector that allows members to choose what theme they see when they're logged in, so it could be added as an option that users would have to manually "opt-in" to and wouldn't affect the default appearance of the site. vB had a similar style selector. Along the same lines, if the colors could be adjusted to be dark / dark grey like the old forum i'd really like that. Members could choose what they want to use, from the outside the default site remains unchanged, everybody wins.

Speaking a bit more broadly I also liked the old banner because it instantly told you what kind of site you were on, the low-key logo as it is now could be, well, anything really. Could be a cooking forum! I don't think the full name "Replica Prop Forum" is actually written anywhere now, and that in and of itself isn't a big deal but there's nothing in the design anymore that communicates where you are to people who don't already know. I know design is a lot more subjective, i'm sure there are people who find the new simpler layout refreshing, and you could probably say that the sites purpose is self-evident from the content. Still, I think the arguement could be made that a little personality goes a long way. Consistency is great, as a designer I like when everything has a cohesive theme, but making the design so unobtrusive that it becomes forgettable can be a problem in and of itself.

Likewise I could keep going down that road for a while, but ultimately that isn't the hill I want to die on here. The first two things are, I think, realistically achieveable and would be (maybe) appreciated by a lot of people like me who were more comfortable on the old site.

As a fan of complaining & one who hates change, I hate it needs a dark theme, loved the charm of the old site now feels generic & can't distinguish between this & sideshow freaks page.. Its was nice to switch between sites & knowing exactly what site I'm on...
I know right! The new site is kinda retina burning.

Are we going to get the “Banned” tag back for those whom couldn’t play nice? I noticed it was gone.

Great job Art. Soo much faster than the old site. Must have been a ton of work. Just checked some of my own threads for any quirks and found some garbling. See this post for what I mean. No biggy as I can probably re edit and clean things up, but highlighting it just in case.

Heads up. The formatting issue with the thread you pointed out should be resolved in the next 24 hours.

Has anyone tried posting in the revised junkyard yet? Whenever I try to create a sale thread it keeps telling me that I must “create a sales thread” after I press the create thread button... very lost and confused.

Can I also suggest if possible adding a 'return to top' option. Many boards have a floating one on the side

There is a Top button at the bottom of the page. If you are on a desktop, you can always hit the Home button. Beyond that, we are not likely to implement a floating button.
