Weekend Warrior's (I know ANOTHER one) Iron Man MK3 Build.

Got more smoothing done on the forearm, I think I'll call it about 95% done at this point. Man those last tiny little imperfections sure take time to deal with! Feeling good about the result so far though.

UPDATE TIME:

I think we have a forearm...

(I'm quite pleased with the detail on that last one :cool)

It's (slowly) moving along, things have been crazy lately between work, my son's tee-ball, training for a 200 mile bike ride I'm doing in mid-July, and everything else that comes up I barely have time to work on this. But I'm determined to take my time and finish each piece the way I want it to be. The support and ideas from this community are just awesome. Thanks all for everything - you helped make this! :D

AWESOME

I feel your pain! I'm in almost the same boat. Work, soccer, working out. Doesn't leave much time for building. However, taking your time to turn out good work now will save you so much more heartbreak later if you aren't happy with the results or people start hating on your build lol.
Duper nice clean work, and I always look forward to updates!

Thanks buddy!

Ain't it the truth? Thanks for the kind words.

I'm loving the quality in this build. Your attention to detail is awesome. I cannot wait till my work is up there with the masters like yourself. Great work indeed...GM

Thanks man! I wouldn't go as far as calling myself a master but the compliment is appreciated!

Ok, Wow. I just realized my last update was quite a while back. This summer has been a busy one!

I have managed to find a few hours here and there to work on it and thought I'd show off my latest progress. I have the shoulder (two pieces) mostly done, just some detailing on the edges to go. Thought I'd sneak in a couple of 90% there pics. :ninja

Here's a shot of it assembled:

Here's the inner portion:

And a nice closeup of the precision of the "slot" in the inner portion:

Like I said, still some edge detailing and a good wet sanding to do, but I really wanted to get some pics up.

I've also been working on the bicep (it's a bit rough to show yet) and should have a complete arm in the fairly near future. Then, on to the chest and back...

Thanks for looking! :D

Back in the swing of things.

I decided to do some work on the back piece over the last few days. Originally I had planned to make all of the back flaps functional, but the more I messed with the idea the more I realized I would probably never do anything with them anyway and building it in one piece would make it easier to get the level of detail I'm going for without having to worry about lining up even more moving parts.

First, I sat down and pepped out the back flaps from Dancin' Fool's models. It's been a long time since I worked with cardstock and glue and it was actually somewhat relaxing...

And Finished:

I then made sure everything fit well on the back piece (which is now fiberglassed and attached to the chest).

It was at this point that I realized I would need to get access to the inside of the flaps to harden and attach them so out came the oscillating saw and...

It was completely terrifying cutting into all of that hard work!

The next step was to fit the paper pieces in place and glue them in the proper position.

The resin is drying now and soon I'll be able to start shaping and finishing the chest and back pieces.

Off to apply another coat of resin!

Well, I thought it was about time for another update. I've been glassing the inside of the chest and back (dang it's a really big piece with lots of little nooks and crannies!) but I've also been working on the arm details. I have the shoulder and bicep near where I want them and couldn't resist bolting the forearm to the bicep. So, here's the left arm...

Components:

I know this build is taking forever, but I'm happy with the quality and time isn't much of a concern.

What do y'all think? :confused

Well I just realized that as of TODAY it has been ONE YEAR since I started this project. :eek

I've been working on it a little bit here and there, and thought I'd throw up some progress pics.

First, the elbow. Dancin Fool did such a great job on the original files that I've barely had to do any real modifications. But the elbows just weren't doing it for me, they seemed too bulky. I decided to reduce their size and also permanently attach them to the forearms. Out came the reference photos and the dremel. I started by slicing the elbow in to pieces to maintain the curves but shrink the overall size. Then I hot-glued the pieces where I wanted them on the forearm.

The next step was to back it with fiberglass and resin and start to work on the shaping. Still a WIP so far but I think it's looking a lot more accurate.

I've also got a lot of shaping done on the torso, there's a ton of detail work to do yet, but the overall shape is really coming together. I did a little work on the helmet too and threw them together for a quick pic.

I'm really starting to like it! :thumbsup This plus the mosltly complete arm is very encouraging to see, since I'll be casting the arm I will only have the lower body to do after these parts are done! I can see a light at the end of the tunnel!

Thanks for looking!
