weathering questions

My wife and I are putting together zombie pirate costumes for some events in the near future, I'm looking for advise on what I could use as far as a grey dust/powder that won't leave stains after cleaning/dry cleaning because my wife wants to use one of her good costumes for a base.
any advise will be appreciated...

Maybe ground up sidewalk chalk? Not sure though.

I was leaning in that direction also,maybe I'll do a test on some work shirts...

I'm not sure how you would make it darker, but what about kitchen flour? That shouldn't stain.

It's more pale brown than grey - but Hershey's cocoa powder is astounding.

That might work, I'm traveling by air so something like that would be easy to pick up there as opposed to carrying bags of powder in my luggage...lol..

I've used Fuller's Earth a couple of times to age and weather props and costume pieces.
