Warhammer 40K Space Marine (FINISHED, page 4)

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

Thanks for the advice! Cutting down the shoulders will be my last resort so I will try the things you suggested. I will also try removing the biceps altogether and see if that helps. And I don't want to do arm extensions as I want to be able to use my hands.

Also, that is my natural face, I can look a lot angrier.

Excerpted from another RPF Thread, compliments of Sylgian. If you look at his finished model, you can see that he still used bicep collars, however he tapered the coverage on the inner side so that he can have arm movement. It seems also that perhaps the biceps were actually 'false' as in, they were just there dangling from his costume, rather than actually containing his upper arm/bicep area.

Perhaps that's some food for thought aswell? Create a faux bicep/upper arm made of 8" drain tubing and simply create a hole low in the chestpiece that goes directly to the forearms? Up to you. From a third person point of view, technically speaking, it looks like whenever someone cosplays as a Space Marine, although it may not be obvious, it looks like they become less of being in a 'costume' and more of a 'puppeteer' from the inside. That seems to be another perspective or mindset you can go for, you know?

And afterall... you can't beat yourself up by not being 100% accurate. These guys are like 7'6" biologically/cybernetically enhanced human beings. For you to reasonably fit inside the armor is a stretch. Of course in terms of feet you can accommodate stilts, but trying to make a functional upper body? That's the tough part as any Space Marine cosplayer I'm sure would admit.

With that said, just do what you can. Regardless of the design limitations, I've never been disappointed with anyone trying to legitimately create a Space Marine suit.

However, if you manage a future picture of yourself with a semi-finished/finished suit of armor, put on your best war face for us! Like King Leonidas style! :D

If you look at page 7 of Sylgians build you can see that he does away with the biceps and just has the flexible tube covering his upper arm.

And I'm thinking that once I have a weapon in my hands it will balance out the look a bit.

I'll make a few adjustments and get fully suited up in the next day or two to see how things look.

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

Could you supply a link to the files that you used to make this . I think I'm ready to take the plunge ;) I love space marines and wh40k

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

I'm using JFCustoms foam files found here on the boards.

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

My advice is to cut away at the bottom of the arm holes in your chest. It'll allow you to have your arms much closer to your body, giving you the illusion of having longer arms. As little as 5cm will give you a massive amount of extra arm length.
Cutting the bottom of the shoulders will leave them looking wrong.

I raised the shoulders about an inch and cut off some of the arm hole, but I may need to cut more. And if it comes down to cutting the shoulders I wouldn't just cut the bottom, I would take the same amount off the width too.

Alright, I got fully suited up to see how everything fits. As I said here ^^^, I raised the shoulders, cut down the arm hole, and removed the biceps. My arms hang a little lower but I may try cutting the arm hole some more. Next is to start working on the helmet and backpack.

PICS!

So my left shoulder is tilted to far forward here giving the illusion that it is bigger then the other shoulder, need to fix that.

PUNY CAR!

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

I think your right shoulder looks close to right. If you can raise it 5cm/2 inches, I think it should look just fine.

ditto that way you don't have the rex effect :)

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

you should cut the shoulder AND put it more upwards... think that you have to carry a weapon or something like that.... I did it, and it was like nigth and day!! if you dont make so, you will not can flex the arm to 90 º ..

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

So I broke down and made some rudimentary arm extensions for the space marine costume. I was/still am against it for safety reasons....but I would rather people look at my costume and think "wow, that's awesome" instead of "that dude has t-rex arms".

The fingers are pieces of coat hangers that were twisted to give them more strength. Once they are in the gloves I can bend the fingers how I want and they will not move. I added foam to the palm area just to pad out the gloves. I still might add some foam to the fingers as well, at least to the ends so they don't poke holes in the gloves. The duct tape is just for added security in case the glue I used decides to give.

These are made with a elastic strap around the forearm so I can just slip my arm straight in and be done.

I should have a new fully suited picture in the next few days to show the difference in arm length.

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

Great idea! I've considered doing something similar... thanks for the inspiration!

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

StiltbeastStudios a user on Youtube, has an awesome idea for hand extentions using part of a bucket & some cpvc pipe for fingers. It has some movement as well via small ringed cables. I'm not sure on rules for posting vids of others ideas, so I'll just leave his screen name, unless you'd like a link to his vid. Either way, AWESOME build, must feel empowering towering over everyone in that !! Keep up the good work !!

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

AND got suited up again to see how the extended arms look. I was very hesitant to do it but it looks so much better now.

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

do you feel comfortable with no hand control ?

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

My gloves don't offer much hand control even without an extension. Open and close. That's about it. However, if someone ever shoots a cylindrical hard plastic object at me at high velocity, I'm golden. :)

Excellent work! Will you do a walking test video?

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

Nah I'm not comfortable with no hand control, but sometimes you gotta make sacrifices.

I will do a walking vid at some point.

Re: Warhammer 40K Space Marine Build: Genesis Chapter

That looks awesome! I never knew it was possible to make such clean sculptures out of foam! The detail on the chest/knee/shoulder guards is unreal!

Great work!
