Meet idea about a broken lens. Maybe even different color or flickering light

I'll be installing glospex (sunglasses that light up) in the helmet, and I've been toying with the idea of only having one of the lenses light up (the one that doesn't have a big scar across it) to imply that whatéver struck the helmet to create that big cut also broke the lens and maybe even blinded the marine. Opinions?

Where are you ordering your glospex from? If you order them from Goglospex.bla be prepared to wait. I ordered some almost 2 weeks ago and I am still waiting for confirmation that they shipped. The guy doesn't answer emails, apparently. There are people that have posted on his facebook page that they are still waiting for theirs for over 2 months!

I like the idea of the broken lens tho. You might be better off just configuring your own rather than break a purchased pair.

Either way, good luck!

Got some tubing meant for plumbing and installet it in my helmet. :) Starting to look like something now! I also got the shoulders together, but they're very flimsy and don't want to keep their shape... Hopefully they will once I get some more parts on them.

Alright, having serious problems with the shoulders... For whatever reason I can't get the right shape, and the "flanges" around the edges wont fit at all (way too small). I printed the templates out correctly, I know that for a fact, so how can the fit be so off? Note that I am using Hasenbrau's templates.

Seriously, why doesn't this flange reach? Am I missing something here? I know lots of people use Hasenbrau's templates, so has anyone had similar problems with them? PLEASE answer, cause I don't want to scrap that much foam. If no-one has answered by tomorrow I'll have to assume Hasenbrau's templates are faulty somehow and use the pepakura templates instead... Sucks to have to scrap that much foam, but I have a deadline to meet.

Just measure out the piece you need and glue it in place rather than cut an entirely new piece. I know Hasenbrau made lots of modifications to his shoulders. You can just fill in the seams with caulk, if there are seams.

That flange seems pretty wide. Can you move the shoulder back a bit to get it to line up more? Not sure, it's hard to tell from the picture.

Let me know how it goes!

EDIT:

Yep, I just looked at Hasenbrau's shoulder flange. Yours are much wider. Take a look.

Sorry for being so quiet! I actually made quite a bit of progress. :) I added the metal mesh to the mouth and head vent thingy as well as some bars to make the mouth seem more interesting... I will add some kind of black fabric to the inside of the mouth to make sure people can't see inside after painting.

I switched from Hasenbrau's templates to the more traditional Pep files for the shoulders and it worked out way better.

Here's the order in which I will build the remaining parts:
1: Pelvis
2: Feet
3: Legs
4: Arms
5: Jetpack if there is time, if not then I'll go with a cape
6: Weapons

Your shoulders look really nice.. Too bad you'll be a heretical traitor marine, your stuff would compliment the loyal troops nicely :)

Also, one of the most important things for a marine is the backpack (not jetpack, unless you're going for a jump pack :p ). Without it, you don't really look as big as a marine should. Take that as you'd like.

I agree with you 100%, but I do have a deadline to meet, and I'd much rather show up without a backpack (thank you for the correction) than without a leg. :p

B6, thanks for all your notes and sharing your rookie experiences. I have yet to craft my freestyle costume and you're asking some questions and getting advice that all foam costume tenderfoots can benefit from.

I understand what you mean about those hasenbrau shoulders. Took me forever to get it right. Still looks a little wonky, but I can work with it. I tried the shoulders you ended up with and I just couldn't get rid of those seams.

Anyhow, will be working with them tomorrow. Need to add some beautyism to them. :)

Thank you for those kind words! Yeah, when searching the forums I'm seeing some gaps in the advice that is given (mostly cause the people here take some knowledge for granted), so I try to ask those questions because frankly, it's not obvious to me. Take the caulking for instance, most logs just say "I caulked the seams" and doesn't even mention what kind of caulk they used or whatnot.

I think that with some detail work and enough sanding I can atleast make the seams very hard to notice.

Pilerud's build on Obscurus Crusade might be helpful. There is a link in Hasenbraus post on his epic build. It has information that you might find helpful. The question about the caulk was a good one. I had searched through many posts before someone actually said the name Alex Plus. Be careful when applying it. Only the tiniest bead is necessary. You then use a wet sponge (tiny bit wet) to smooth the caulk into place. I tend to be heavy handed. If this build has taught me anything, it's to take things slow, measure twice, cut once and try not to copy what everyone else has done exactly the way they did it.

I've seen some instances where the caulk wasn't used at all, only a mouse sander, and it ended up looking great. Good luck, my friend! I'll be watching!

Pilerud has already helped me a great deal personally actually. :) We're both swedish, so the brand names are the same for us.
Anyway, I painted this... It sorta represents what I want the end result to look like. :)

Nice! If you talk to Pilerud, tell him I said thanks for the information file he put together.

i ended up using Hasenbraus files. They were a little wonky, but I think they'll be okay for what I'm doing.

Question time!
How do you guys build the legs? One sheet of the foam I use is no-where near big enough for the entire shin or thigh... In fact, the shin is not only wider than one sheet of foam, but also taller, meaning I'd have to glue atleast 4 sheets of foam together in a square to fit the entire template on there. I'm using the same puzzle-piece foam mats that lots of people use, so how do you do it? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I'm on my way to the hardware store to buy more supplies now, so I'm hoping to have atleast one reply by the time I get back. :)

I cut the ends off of my sheets and glued them together.
You could also cut the template into smaller pieces, but that leaves a lot of seams that you have to work on afterwards. I recommend just gluing the sheets together.

I'm guessing you don't have access to the large 72" by 48" foam sheets? That's what I used. Other people have used multiple pieces of foam as Deetoz mentioned. It's just going to take a little more time to put everything together.

I'm reviving this thread since I've started up this project again! I think I've got most of the stuff figured out now.I'm going with a minimal endo skeleton since I've noticed the thing is pretty stable on it's own, and I only need the endo to make the suit fit my body. My problem right now are the knee and thigh joints. I've been looking at this kind of hose, but it's extremely expensive.

It's basically a hose for ventilation that's 25cm in diameter. I'd use that to cover the joints in the knees and thighs. Does anyone have any neat ideas? What could I use instead? I'm trying to think of some ghetto solution that wont cost me that much.
