War Machine Costume

I'm so busy with various projects I forgot about my pet project - a War Machine costume from the new movie. I only have about 3 weeks, or less before the movie opens, so I'm going to kill myself to try and get it done in time.
Only 3 days into it and I have the two side arm guns. I decided on Vacuform hollow plastic so they don't add weight to my arms. I'll try to add lights later, just trying to get the whole thing together first, then I'll add all the fancy details.
I started by drawing them in profile in the computer so I could scale them and then spray glue the prints to various thicknesses of wood that I cut out then stacked to get the shape of the body of the gun.
Then I made the front heat sinks out of wood and plastic and made a mold so I could pour up a set in urethane for both sides. The barrels are plastic and wood with some bondo, and then a vinyl texture pad in the form of knurling, that I wrapped around the vacuformed tips. Next up - the shoulder Gatling gun!

Been busy, but not sure if I'm going to make my May 7th deadline. made more parts for the shoulder Gatling. Assemble later once I have the arm and the base parts vacuformed. Started on the head, but I hate the look, if I have the time (pray) I will redo it after everything else. I move onto the shoulders and arms, they come easily, foam and more foam, but now I have to create clamps to hold the vacuformed arm guns, and it's slow going, so much to make, so many small pieces.

Hello sir. Impressive work! I am an amateur. What is that material you are using? I love your shoulder bells and gauntlets. Where does one get this material?

Got the knees and lower legs done, patterning the thighs, hope to have them done by tomorrow. I use a dense microcell foam called L-200, most people know of it, but can't get it in the large thick sheets I buy. It's really the cats meow for making soft armor that is comfortable to wear and light. I pattern in mattress foam first to make sure the paper patterns work, and since the L-200 is expensive. I hope to be to the painting by Tues. (fingers crossed):lol

WOW! This is a really cool build and I love seeing this come together. I hope you make your deadline. Really impressive work, I wish I had your talent.

its amazing how fast you built this so far. If you're working around the clock , there is no doubt you could have something very awesome for the premiere,

***** ****** I want your ARM GUN gauntlet pattern. If I had a workshop I can make one as well! I think this is the best gauntlet gun reproduction i have seen. Most war machine builders follow the "marvel select" toy pattern gun and I believe it is not accurate.

One more question. That L200 foam, really looks awesome What thickness is it?. I will order some on monday!

*bow down to you sir! I say Bow down!
what paint are you planning to use? because I am going to build a Mark V using this method.

who said people all want it movie accurate?
Not everyone has workshops to achieve movie accuracy details like this

LOL calm down dude. its just my opinion! LOL I know my build is no movie accurate as well, but in my eyes, i think guns should resemble guns. even philip said my gauntlet guns look like FN2000.

that gauntlet gun squid is using is mostlikely to be impossible to pep. so i am with you with not following accuracy STEALTH. LOL

Peace Love Unity and Respect!! LOL

Whould love to se you show this at the ironman buildersboard. This is a most intresting build.

fair enough *HUG* :lol

PaulFierce - Actually I have vector drawings of the side guns, if that gets you closer, and it's actually not as bad as I thought it would be. I have a method I use for weapons nowadays that involves thinking of them in layers, that stack like a cake. It takes a bit to lay it out and it requires a band saw and scroll saw, but other then that, it's just careful cutting and gluing and vola! Maybe I'll do a seperate post on weapons later, actually I am building a chain sword for someone and when I'm done with this I have to get back to it and the Tron legacy disks. (no I haven't forgotten about them) But I can try going into more detail later, no time now, I have to finish a new helmet, the last one looks terrible.

wondersquid- Thank you for your reply. I studied the gauntlet gun via the hottoys figure and I also made mine like a cake, by layers. Funny how you would say that. I used mattress foam and then layered it with black foam board. if you look really closely it is cut up in 3 sections. I know it is not as hardcore as yours but I just wanted to get the shape of it.

Thank you again. WHen you have the time, can you send me the vector drawing? please? I messaged you my email. Thank you.

Sorry, been busy! Here's more pics. Got the thighs finally, man, what a pain to cut all the detail parts, let alone to pattern them. But I managed to make another helmet, a better version with a separate visor, I might vacuform the face plate so I can rig it to open. I started on base shapes for the chest and back, but it's getting late and this burning the candle at both ends has killed me. I don't think I'll make my Thursday midnight deadline, but maybe I'll go over the weekend and see it in costume.:cool Oh yeah, I forgot, I'm almost done with the Gatling gun. I rigged it with PVC pipe so I can articulate it, maybe put motors in there later.:cry
