Voltron Costume

Just finished up the major parts of the Red Lion Head transfering it to EVA Foam. I still need to attach a loop on the upper/lower part of the mouth for my hand to attach and also place a tube inside for my arm to fit in. Once it is painted I will be using plexiglass or plastic and frosting them over for the eyes and putting LED lights behind with an actuator switch to turn them on and off with the movement of my hands.

I am going to seal the foam with Modge Poge since I have some at home. If anyone can think of a better and cheap way to make sure the paint sticks I would like some advice. Thanks for all the feedback.

I think the ears need to be a bit bigger. If you look at the last photo you posted, the ears protrude out from the side of the head, then go up to the point. That makes them a bit larger than the ones you have so far.

Looking great over all though. Can't waitt to see more. :thumbsup

You can use drywall sealer to seal it for paint. Mod podge takes a really long time to dry fully and remains almost sticky to the touch...

So I painted the mask last night and there is a design on the forehead and after watching the cartoon it looks like a blue dot and other reference pictures I see it is a black oval. Can anyone shed some light on this as to what they would use for the design on the forehead? Thanks

Another thing, the mouth is off too. You have the back of the mouth as a straight line when in fact that the top and bottom half slant so that they come to a point in the back, sort of like this < but wider/taller of course.

It's definitely coming along though. Reading posts like yours and others really makes me want to start my own foam armor pet project.

Chadster,
I didnt realize it was you that emailed me on instructables. Message me and Ill see if I can get you the patterns and reff pics you were wanting. Im in Wright City, so its not too far to come up one weekend if ya want. Let me know....

Worked on the red lion some more last night. I was curious if anybody knew where I can get a copy of the numbers that go on the back of each of the lions. Thanks for the help and all the feedback.

Hey, buddy! Did you end up going with the Modge Podge to seal? Give me a call if you have some free time over the next couple of weeks...if you're still wanting/needing some help.

I wasn't planning on it since I am not good with shading. I would end up having to repaint the whole think since I would probably jack it up somehow.

First 2 sections of red lion completed. The eyes will hve a frosted lens placed with a yellow LED behind them, which I do not have installed will probably wait until the very end so I can wire them all together on one switch. The number on the back of the red lion I used Photoshop to complete.

This turned out really seamless! I can not even tell it is foam!
Any chance of light up eyes?

Yes the eyes will be light up with yellow LEDs. Once all the lions are completed so I can put them all on one switch. Thanks for the positive feedback

Looks Great. I know how time consuming it can be. I plan on keeping on eye on yours to see how it turns out.

Thank you for the compliments. I see jpr98 that you are building a Voltron also. Will it be modeled after the original or the new Voltron Force?. Good luck on your build. There have been a couple times I just wanted to scrap the whole project. Took a break and now back at it. Just finished the templates for the back section of red lion. Will post updated pictures soon. Thanks again for the compliments.

Actually, Green Lions sides of the mouth were rounded, not octangonal
like red lion. I'm talking about the side openings on the top and bottom
jaws. You have them both octagonal in shape.

Every lions head was slightly different from one another.

Looking great so far though. I'll be watching this thread for sure!

I found this pic from the 25th anniversay votlron the mouth of the green lion is not rounded. only the body is. I think it depends on what version you plan on using as your reference

I understand the frustration. same here. you want it sooooo perfect that any imperfection you just want to put in the trash. (which I have done). lol especially as you build continues you learn new techniques with cutting or gluing etc. Your is one I am keeping watch on. Im rooting for you.
