Vikings - History Channel

Anyone watch this last night? It's a 9 part miniseries and was shot really well. It follows Ragnar Lithbrok and his quest to explore.

Granted it's only 1 episode in, but I liked it and they're definitely trying to hop on the Game of Thrones bandwagon.

I didn't see it, but I am really interested in watching this. Saw a trailer for it over the weekend, it looks awesome.

Had a pitch session with them about four years ago after which we were told "The show is great but we don't want 'history' shows anymore, we want stuff like Ice Road Truckers".

I believe my response was along the lines of "You've got to be ****ing kidding me".

Doesn't surprise me in the least. They're seriously headed into MTV territory where they really just ought to rebrand themselves.

History, TLC, and Discovery have all gone this route and basically made their brands irrelevant. What's worse is that in those few moments when the History Channel DOES do something historically related (other than this -- I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds entertaining), it's all REALLY basic stuff and done in a cheesy "We grabbed as many local SCA folks as we could" way. It's tough to take the channel seriously anymore. Hopefully this signals a change in the winds at the network.

P.S. Avoid similarly titled movies starring Kirk Douglas, or rockin' a wiki on Ragnar if you don't want to know how it ends...

I been waiting for it since they 1st teased about it. Got it on the DVR at home, so i'll watch it tonight. Seems that people have enjoy it so far.

I haven't seen it yet. I used to do Viking re-enactment (11th century Varangian) back in my younger days, and I'm too afraid I'll groan with disgust all the way through it.

Saw it last night and really liked it. Been waiting for it since they first ran the previews. Hope it keeps up with the way its going.

They're looking tough without that moody, broody, emo nonsense about them. Like... real tough. Think I'm gonna check it out if it comes out on BR.

Love the Viking period. I used to re-enact, too. My local group was a Norman one, but we did fight Vikings at York, which was fun. (still got a small scar from a Viking sword, it's about this far from my eye |_| )

Also, liking the look of the Viking hottie on the left. :)

Some folks still wish that Hardrada had kicked Harold's butt AND Billy the *******'s. :)

Yeah, something about a woman with a broadsword gets me every time. ;)

Never forget! :D

Well, two episodes in, I'm enjoying it. Could it be better? Undoubtedly. But, given that it's the History Channel (which is to history what the SyFy channel is to science fiction) it could also be a whole lot worse.

I'm sure liking it! It's not perfect, but it's got great ambiance and cinematography, and good acting. It definitely has some of that Game of Thrones vibe, along with a dash of The Tudors. As a lover of adventure and exploration, I certainly hope the show takes us to some cool spots!

The second episode already aired? Damn how did I miss it, was it last night? The only episode I saw last night was "Rite of Passage" which was the first episode I thought.

Hmm, it looks like the 2nd episode can be watched on the website for the series, but doesn't premiere on TV until March 10th.

We have the first DVR'd as well, and plan to watch it tonight.

We just watched the first episode (had it DVR'd since we were still out of town for ECCC on Sunday) and I am LOVING this! I can't wait to see more. :)

I forgot that this was on but I've been meaning to check it out. Going by what everyone is saying, I'm even more pumped.

That is unless you guys have **** taste in tv shows ;)

We got a chance to watch the first episode last night, and both enjoyed it. I'm a Bernard Cornwell fan (particularly the Saxon Stories), and this is a fun on-screen romp through a very similar setting. Looking forward to the rest of the series. :thumbsup
