As for hte paint take your grill inside and take pics of it then judge the color. The warm could be that the source photos were shot indoor which tends to yellow things up a bit.
If it still looks off then i think it's just a matter of finind a closer shade..the technique is spot on though.

Hey, everyone.

I finally got a little more work done on V.I.N.CENT. I've got the back section added and fiberglassed in place. I was struggling to get the sides contoured properly. A friend of mine builds highly detailed models from matchsticks, so I adapted the idea to fit my needs. I used wooden sticks glued from the back plate to the point the sides should meet on the inner sphere. I then saturated the sticks with resin and built up about four layers of fiberglass for strength. You can still see the sticks on the top and on one side that I haven't added bondo to yet. This will be sanded smooth, and hopeful I'll be that much closer to painting V.I.N.CENT.. This is turning out to be a far more complicated project than I originally thought.

The Body of the one I saw at Disney World when I worked there was made out of wood (which does not surprise me-since a lot of movie things are made out of wood-)
You on the right track with the paint. Sponge, but make sure to vary the sides of the sponge when adding the colors. Some carbon black, then a silver with black added, then silver alone. If you want to add some "warmth" to the color you might add a touch of yellow ochre to a silver -this looks like what they started with first for the base coat of the boday and then started the sponge fun.
The paints used for the movie could of come from Mann Brothers Paint-not cheap paint but it is what we used in the scenic shop at WDW and is some of the best paint out there. Its all over the parks 8)

Thanks for the painting info, Megatron. Hope to get some more pics up in the next week or so. I have considered making a fiberglass mold, not sure how many people would actually be interested. I've still got a lot of reshaping to do on the sides, trying to get him as accurate as possible. Trying to extrapolate all the measurements from photos is quite a headache.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! Andy, V.I.N.CENT. is starting to get pretty heavy, I'd say about 35-40 lbs. right now and I've still got a way to go. This weekend I engineered a support that will allow the head to turn while the "hat" stays stationary. It's on bearings, so it turns very easily. Might try to rig it with a motor later on. I'll try to get some pics up in the next couple of days. I'd love to make a fiberglass mold, but I'll probably need some pointers! I've only done RTV with fiberglass mother molds so far. I'm still ironing out some other details.
(By the way starfighter66, I like your avatar. I've got a beagle too! )

Well, it's been a while, but here's another update.

I'm finally starting to get the sides if the gun/arm boxes blended into the body. Slow and steady wins the race.
