UPDATE* BOUGHT IT -So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

They actually had a team of "ghosthunters" out there who filmed their experiences and it was shown on some television show.
Too bad that they have already been there. I was on the verge of suggesting something like this ..
There is a reality TV show format that involves bringing a medium to the place to help the ghost(s) over to the other side. If it was possible, then it could have meant both a free exorcism and free publicity.

They picked up EVP of someone saying "You don't belong here" ...
That's questionable. A real ghost -- if ghosts exist -- is stuck in his ways and would not try to have a different kind of existence than the one he had when he was alive. That's the whole essence of being a ghost: holding on, refusing to adapt to the circumstances ...
Only if it was reasonable that the person would have uttered "You don't belong here" back in that same spot back before he died would he do so as a ghost.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Oh, that is just so cool and too good an opportunity to pass up if you can come up with even the slightest reason to go ahead on with it!!

Couldn't really tell over your enthusiasm if you wanted or needed the place to be a profitable venture. Depending on where this is located, not sure if you could make it profitable on showing old movies alone. But I have a cousin, he and his wife had their wedding reception at an old theater where she grew up that had been restored and turned in to a multi-event venue, still capable of showing movies but that's not the main butter on the bread.

Lots and lots of things you could do. If you're putting in living quarters, you could consider making it one of those "fantasy hotel rooms" suites........A Night in the Haunted Theater.....

So exciting, do keep the details coming......

Very Cool Jett! Are you going to display props in the lobby? I would gladly donate any of my paper props to you. (Iron Man, BTTF, etc).

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Congrats on what appears to be your impending purchase. It would be cool if you could snap off some pics of the before, during and after renovations. I think if profitability is not an issue, it would be cool to own a theatre.

What is even cooler is the fact that you are doing this to share your love of the movie experience with others! With the newer multiplexes and smaller cinemas, some of the wow has gone from the experience of going to the movies.

Only issue about free screenings though is the issue of public liability. Surely you are going to need to charge something, if only to recoup the costs of your public liability insurance?

Yes, you definitely will have to set up displays of your stuff!!! I know of someone who had displayed a whole lifesize collection in an old movie theater, but with the seats removed it of course wasn´t a movie theater anymore, especially with the projection screen being torn down.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Dooood.
This is the coolest thing ever.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

"haunted" It's never haunted enough for the price to come down is it? LOL
Or maybe they thought it is a selling point.

Make it into a working theater again!

Ghosts do not exist of course as far as I am concerned, popular belief though.
They DO exist in peoples imaginations at minimum, and that is a FREE attraction factor.
Showing horror movies in a supposed "haunted" theater? Dude, that is a bonus.
Many tourist attractions seem to have "ghosts". Funny how that works.
Obviously you cannot advertise that as it is blood money on those poor folks, but it is a pre-existing local myth that will bring some people in the door.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Charging SOMETHING would keep the riff raff out, too. ;)

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

This is very exciting. It will be your biggest prop ever. Like others have mentioned I would love to see progression shots. Maybe to recoup a little change and your boy would love this is to occasionally do a lockin and host a gaming tournament.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Is the theater on a historical registry or able to be? Aren't there government grants to offset the restoration? I love the older theater architecture, best of luck with the purchase and renovation.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Time to start planning the GRAND OPENING prop party of all prop parties:lol

Best of luck in your endevour Jet:thumbsup. With all the old theaters being renovated and torn down, modern movie goers are missing out on a lot of the old theatre going experience. It's nice to see someone who values the grand old movie experience.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

I say buy it. Haunted or not. Would be awesome to own one of those. YOu could watch whatever you wanted on a huge screen. I know alot of movies out there that I haven't seen but would love to watch on a big screen. Best of luck to ya with your decision

Just tell the ghosts they have to re-pay for admission if they chose to stick around for another film. This ain't no free double feature.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Unless I missed it, just curious as to where it's located? I love old buildings like that and was wondering if it was within visiting distance.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Buy it! It's a once in a lifetime chance and there is no such thing as ghosts. Those ghosthunter shows are fake! I don't buy into that crap for one second. Boy would I love to go to an old time theater and watch my favorite 70's movies all over again

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

this is probably one of the coolest things i've read on the RPF. seriously, man... AWESOME! i can't wait to see the shots of the place. i've had a huge love of old theaters since i can remember. the orpheum in memphis screens old prints quite a bit during the summer. they even have pre-movie trivia... SO FUN! good luck with it!

on a related note, my big childhood theater hangout was recently shut down and boarded up--a huge downer. it was the ONLY theater i visited until i was probably 15. my parents even went on their first date there. a good friend/co-worker is really big into "urban exploration", or simply breaking into old, abandoned buildings and looking around. he's been in the old theater a few times with his crew. they've found old log books, mylars, and a huge board in the projection booth filled with old 35mm film leader titles ranging from the mid 80s to early 00s. i've been trying to get in contact with the owners... hoping to snag a set of seats for my home theater or something.

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Depending on the size of the Lobby as mention already by others here...

Create a Prop Display in the Lobby which could bring in Visitors and a regular profit from Viewers of the Props, then they could enjoy the bonus of a Movie Screening!

I really wish I was able to buy an old theater and fix it up, there are so few great theaters around anymore... it's just a real shame!

Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

The theater where Lee Harvey Oswald was apprehended is a neat classic theater showing rare indie flicks and lots of retro movies. I go there at least 3 or 4 times a month. American: The Bill Hicks Story is playing there now and Hobo with a Shotgun opens there next month. It's called Texas Theatre. Check out their schedule on the web. Re: So I've been offered an old movie theatre built in the late 30s

Hey Jet, you could offer a place for indie filmmakers to showcase their stuff.

Would love to see pics. There are a couple of abandoned theaters here in Ft. Wayne. Would love to get a hold of one.

Good luck and have fun.
