Upcoming Hasbro tubeless light saber?

"Ignites a beam of light". I still think there is a plastic tube. Probably with sequenced LEDs starting up. I don't see any evidence of it being tubeless in the text. They just said "cut the lights".

The same, I have studied quantum mechanics at its highest level and I am not sure how they would do that. Pictures if possible please.

If I had a real lightsaber, there would be no trees left standing around my house and all of my neighbors would have no arms or legs...

Wish there were pics to share but haven’t found any out there. I read a couple of different press releases and one said there would be no tube but who knows?

Anyone know how to research the recent patent?

Read an article that stated only a select few were in the room to see this saber in action at the Star Wars Celebration. Apparently no pictures/video were allowed, and one person (who remained nameless) stated the saber does indeed project a beam of light, with the hilt dispensing a mist/smoke to project on to. They also said it’s very likely this saber would never see the light of day in regards to retail. I’ll see if I can find said article and link it.

...Wait. You mean it's literally this?

There are already threads on both of these versions.
The retractable one is like a double sided tape measure where the two halved unroll and zip together on the way out. This is supposed to be specifically for actors within the star wars land at Disney (stunt shows and the like)
The "mist-saber" was an unfinished concept/prototype discussed at celebration

From the patent:

To extend the blade, a motor provided in the hilt body is operated to unroll the rolled/spooled plastic blade body members from their reels/spools with each member (or blade half) acting much like a metal carpenter's tape measure. Each blade body member passes through a blade forming guideway or passageway that acts to “zip” the two semi-cylindrical blade body members together (or with portions along their length overlapping each other or one nesting inside the other) as they leave the hilt body, thereby forming the energy blade. To retract the blade, the process is reversed with the motor acting to wind the pair of spools to reel or wind the extended blade body members back into the hilt body and onto the pair of spools/reels.

As Trooper_Trent said: This will work like a tape measure, where the outer material is flat when spooled, but curved when deployed. It wouldn't be strong enough to hold up to anything other than non-contact mock fighting. It also requires external power.

Perhaps they should look into licencing and miniaturizing the Spiralift products: Spiralift: The Ultimate Telescoping Linear Actuator | Hizook
