Undersuit / Diveskin/ Unitard

Hey Gang,

I need a couple of undersuits for little project, but I can't find any with a back-zipper. Every darn suit I find has it in front. I'd rather get a "thicker" Dive skin type than one of those ballét-typ unitards because they look so thin.

I got a tip from Batnemo about a dancewear place, but I wanna get the thickest lycra-type suit I can find.

(Oh, and using a neoprene (wetsuit) is a no-go. Too hot.)

Any thoughts?

Have you tried http://www.renaissancedancewear.com/ ? I highly recomend their stuff. I got black tights from them when I was doing Renaissance fencing and they are real thick, definately opaque, but still breath good. Since they custom make the stuff they should be able to do one with a back zip.

Yeah, I e-mialed renaissance , but I haven'g gotten a reply yet. I thought they weren't operating any longer?

I just got one from spandexman.com They have every different style you can imagine, and more :p

Was thinking of them too, but the delivery times are loooong and I gotta have them before october (guess why). :p

Maybe I'll e-mail them anyway and see if they can get them out quicker.

Not sure how much you want to spend, but Body Glove sells a black dive skin that zips in the back.

What are you using them for? I had one of the Body Glove dive skins and was going to use it to mount my Batman armor on. I switched to the unitard because even the 0.5 mm dive skin heats up real quick. I've had my Batman armor mounted for about 3 years now and haven't had any problems with it sagging or pulling off.

by saying__THICK____but not hot, you seem to be looking for___druable:)

My experience, is,
diving related items are meant to protect you from
hypothermia....or keep you warm,

this is good for those holiday parades in northern climates.

and the Unitard, is meant to keep you cool, while dancing your tush off,

I have had success with the Unitard, but only for warm events.

After doing an event at an ICE HOCKEY game,
I found being on the ICE, a little cool, but not too bad.

but if you are outside and it is around 50 and windy,
well.....depends on what else you have on.

Haha... I actually ordered the bottom one but had to cancel after some of the guys over at BOTB (yes, it's a Batman Begins suit I'm doing) told me they were murder. Anything in Neoprene is out.

By thick, I mean "not looking like a leotard but like a suit that one would wear under armor". The screen-used suit was (from what I've read) some kind of wetsuit and if you look at pics, the undersuit looks really thick- you don't see the actual body structure underneath (like you do with a typical unitard) but rather a smoothed-out version. Am I making any sense here?

The trick is to make the undersuit look like an extention of the armor and if it's too thin in comparison, the armor will just look "stuck on".

At the moment I am leaning towards getting two Henderson Lycra dive skins like a lot of the Troopers use and then moving the zipper on one of them to the back. I would then wear both, one on top of the other. That way the outer, armored version, will be easier to take on and off.

I've worn a lot of motorcycle leathers and they're pretty hot, so I figure two lycra suits can't be that horrible.

Another idea I have is to cut parts of a rubberized wetsuit and glue them onto a lycra undersuit in certain areas, like around the elbow area.

Although I have not done it yet myself, a lot of the folks at BOTB finish off their suits by brushing black latex onto the exposed lycra of the undersuit. This gives it a "one-piece" look. They leave the back of the undersuit alone (it's covered by the cape) so that they don't roast.

Randy

That is my current plan, although I will probably only need to cover the knee and elbow areas- the rest will be covered in armor and boots. But there is still the issue of thickness unless I want to brush on many, many layers of latex. (I was actually thinking of spraying it instead of brushing.)

If I get hold of RDW, I'm going to ask about "doubling up" a suit in the leg and arm areas for extra thickness.

You'd probably need to do a couple of layers to build it up. If you decide to airbrush latex, make sure you thin it before you try to run it through the airbrush. I use a mixture of distilled water and ammonia (about 50/50). Try to get it to the consistency of milk before spraying it. If you donÂ’t thin it, it will clog up the brush pretty quickly.

Randy

Actually, the latex I have is almost water-thin out of the bottle. (almost too thin in fact) I was leaning towards using a heavy-duty auto-body spraygun istead of my airbrush.

I just called RDW and they will not be taking orders until the 15th. Looks like they might be able to ship it by the end of the month so if I don't find another solution before then, that'll probably be the way to go. If I do my 2-suit idea, it's gonna run me upwards of $200 with shipping... but on the other hand I'll have an extra undersuit to use with my Stormy-suit.

In the meantime... if anyone else comes up with somehting... I'm all ears.

I'm currently looking into motorcycle undersuits, but most of them seem a bit baggy and are made of polyester. I remember us discussing a site here before... they did undersuits for motorcycle leathers... but were slow in delivering or some such? Can't remember the name.

Just a heads-up guys. Don't get stuff from underleathers. Lots of UK Troopers have had problems with them.

The current favorite are:

www.extremeracing.co.uk

I just bought two undersuits from there and they arrived in just a couple of days.. Quality looks to be ok... ask me after Halloween if my Batsuit is still in one piece.

Ah, then a regular thickness Diveskin would do fine. Skin does not show through like it can with a dance-related garment.

Back in my trooping days I swore by diveskins. Breathed really well, didn't make you hot.

By "thick" it almost sounded like you needed a SCUBA wetsuit, which most certainly WOULD make you hot, and limit your movements a bit as well.
